just to be doubly sure (550 w/ 650 cam question)
« on: April 24, 2010, 07:01:29 AM »
a 79 cb650 cam shaft happened upon me for 10 bucks, looks to be in good condition. I am planning a late summer spruce up of the engine internals, while I'm in there, can I just drop the 650 cam into the engine direct swap? use the gear on the 650 shaft? and how much will this (to steal hondaman's wording in the tips section) "wake up" the mid power? thanks guys

It's a drop in cam....said to work well.

550 Tachometer will not work with 650 cam.  Have to get a tach from a 650.  The gearing inside the tach itself is different.

I literally JUST completed this swap. It was pretty easy. The only real challenging part was the 4 totally seized fasteners I had to deal with. But got it installed, set tappet clearances, and timed the engine (it needed it bad), and then I fired it up. Maybe it's because I'm tired, but to me it sounds a bit meaner. I gotta wait until later to ride it...stupid rain!

Good luck on your swap! It's fun and worth it for such a low cost.
