Topic: Manometer Mercury Refill?

So, I'm looking for sources for mercury for my motion pro manometer. Somehow my seal on the thing broke and dumped mercury all over me. A member on here Jim has been kind enough to check his warehouse for some but was also wondering if anyone has any good sources for the stuff. Since I'm sure this will happen again to someone else in the future.

I got my hands on a motion pro carb tuner however I'm in need of the 5MM adapters. I'd really like to buy from a local store seeing as how I'm impatient and all. Does anyone know where these adapters that hook the carb synch up to the intake manifold can be found at?

Also, anyone in Dallas with these let me know if you can lend them out!

Here's what I did after I broke one 

go to local auto store and buy one of these:


chuck it up in a drill, take a hacksaw and cut off 2 "barbs"
Then file down the other two smooth, and tap it to the correct thread ( i can't remember off hand)

Throw an o-ring on it and you have an adapter!

I was looking up how to make your own homeade manometer and found a thread saying you can hat the ends of the plastic tubes and stretch them to make them get really narrow. Then plug the intake mainfold hole up with the newly narrowed tube. I did this and it seems to be airtight.

The only problem is that previously I somehow knocked out all of the mercury in my manometer. I filled it up with transmission fluid and when the bike is running it keeps sucking it up the manometer and doesnt stop. What would cause this?

maybe a difference of about 15 times in specific weight (oil to mercury that is)?

hope you didnt spill all that mercury in a closed room...

Yeah, ATF is nowhere near as dense as mercury, hence the sucking and losing of fluid on your part- you would need a very tall manometer to keep the ATF fluid in.
On the homemade manometers people talk of using small ID aquarium tubing, something that really throttles the air flow down.

Well I have called every school and university in town and no one has any liquid mercury I guess I am done for!

For about 40 bucks or so you can get a Motion Pro dial setup and not fiddle with mercury. If the bike accidentally revs, it sucks the mercury into the engine. Not a problem for the motor, but you have no mercury.

If you are talking the barbs that screw into the vacuum port, try wire welding tips from Harbor Freight or similar.

Where?  The Motion Pro website quotes $100 for this tool.  Who sells it for $40?

I called motion pro today and apparently all of the refill options are for the new non-mercury based maonometers. No one sells mercury they told me my only option is to buy a new manometer.

A couple of pieces of left-over small diameter brake line, with ends threaded 5mm....works for me - and a lot less than $10.

#10-32 matches the 5MM thread exactly. The link I'm sending you is from the Clippard Minimatic catalog. The fittings you want are on page 321. You will need to know the inside dia. of your hose to select one. these should be available from any supplier of pneumatic products in your area. If not Clippard, they will have a substitute of which there are many.

Jim I would appreciate it so much I've been looking for about 2 days now and have called everywhere imaginable the reservoir I'm trying to fill is 1.5" X 2" X 0.5" so it shouldn't be very much at all! I'll PM you with shipping information!

By the way if anyone else has sources/some lying around let me know in case Jim has gone mad.

i'll tell you where to get mercury.
find you a friend in the air conditioner business and acquire from him several of the old mercury home thermostats.
 
i hear several governments are making these guys recycle them as they are usefull for "triggering devices", so be careful who you talk to.

dont forget mercury is toxic!
