cleaning jets - how? 750k2
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:58:14 AM »
To try to resolve the ongoing running problems...the wire clip running underneath the carbs seems a little stiff. Do I just lever it off towards the front of the bike ( I don't want to take the carbs off) and will it easily go back on?

While you dont wont to take the carbs of you really should. Makes the job of cleaning the carbs much easier and less likely to bend a float or something. Of course it really helps if your airbox rubber and engine rubbers are in good pliable shape. Makes it very easy to remove carbs. Anyway as far as the metal tang goes use a screw driver to pry it off...it can be stiff. And if the float bowls havent been off in a while they can also be hard to remove...which is why removing the carbs makes it all so much easier.

good luck
Andy

Andy is correct. To do it right you should remove the carbs. If you are a bit hesitant to do that you can take the float bowls off and will be able to remove the jets to clean them. Look to see if there is junk in the float bowls when you take them off. If you have junk in there you probably have it in some of the holes of the slow jet, imulsifier tube and jet. You can take the floats off, but do not force the pin holding the float. If it is stuck as you can break the pin bracket off and then you will have another problem. Here is a pic of what you may see when you take the bowls off. The 2 brass screws you see are the 2 jets. Click the pic to enlarge. The 2nd pic is the imulsifier tube and what you may see when you remove it. When you put these back in be careful. They are brass and if you tighten up the slow jet on the right to tight you can brake it off. And do not run anything but a E guitar string through the jet holes or you can mess up the jetting. I just use carb cleaner and compressed air. This should give you some tips and get you going. Oh, check your fuel tank to be sure you do not have junk in there that will get into your clean carbs. You may want to flush the tank or install fuel filters on the lines until they are clean. And the jets you take out of carb #1 should go back in carb #1. Same with the float needles they go back to the original float seats. You will not be able to check the float height or do a sync with them on the bike which will be a downfall of doing them on the bike. Last, look at the numbers on the jets when you take them off. Just to be sure the previous owner did not put the wrong ones in there.

i've used guitar strings to clean the heavy crap out of jets and passages

Thanks- that looks easy, but I've heard that getting the carbs on & off can be a difficult sealing problem?

Its only difficult getting them on/off if the rubber has hardened up. New rubber will solve this problem and provide a nice tight seal.

Did you download a service manual from this site yet? That will help you too. And how about a couple pics of that K2 for us? We like pics here... ;D

I have cleaned many of jets by just removing the float bowl. But it will make it a lot easier to do if you remove the bottom of the air cleaner.
I have never used a guitar string,(don't play guitar, just drums and drum sticks are to thick), but you can strip a piece of electrical wire and remove one starnd for the pilot jets.
It does need to be a light gage wire though.
The outside carbs are the easiest to do, but the 2 inside carbs are hard to see what you are doing.
Go "borrow" one of your wifes, daughters or girlfriends small mirrors to place under the inside carbs and you will be able to get a visual on where the jets go back.

Good luck!
