strange neutral light problem
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:52:19 PM »
Hi,

71 750K1. Engine is stock. Riding tonight the neutral light came on when I down shifted to fourth gear. When I came to a red light and shifted into first the light went out. Started out and the light came on in second, third and fourth and then out in fifth.

Never had this problem before and the bike ran fine all night.

thanks,

Bud.

Might be a reason to suspect the neutral switch? When you do your next oil change, pull it out and clean it. It has a metal ball (bearing) loaded with an internal spring that forces it closed, except when the bike is in neutral in which case the ball is forced down and there is a possibility for metal particles from the engine to fall into the switch (possibly allowing it to short). If you stick a toothpick between the metal ball and the housing and wash it vigorously in solvent you will help flush out whatever metal contamination might be trapped in the switch.

Cookin,

I'll do that. I have to get rid of the winter oil this week. What is puzzling is that it seems OK in 1st and 5th.

thanks,

bud.

You know, now that you mention the oil, I put 30 weight in when I store the bike for the winter and haven't changed it yet. I normally run 20W-50 in it. It's finally starting to warm up so I need the change it. I'll let you know.

Mo'litely loose wire connector at the 'N' switch under the motor touching off ground ( = N light 'on' ).
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
