Question about brake caliper piston on a 750
« on: May 24, 2010, 12:41:30 PM »
Hi everybody -
I am rebuilding a couple of brake calipers and was interested to find a convex metal cap that fits perfectly into the end of the brake piston.  I have been riding a 750 for years and have never had this piece on my bike.  Of the two salvaged calipers that I tore down, only one had it, yet both still had the old pads installed.  What's the story here?  Do I need this part?  Was it only available on some years and not others?  Most importantly, how does it affect the brake's functionality?

So many questions...

I think they are relatively pricy $28+/-, hence one was stripped from the caliper you bot.

It allows the pad to float and press against the disc perfectly square to the disc. Your caliper can work without it, but the piston will be further out from the cavity it lives in, further than its designed to be. And the pressure onto the disc may be off a bit.

They never wear out, but basket cases that are in baskets for a long time tend to lose parts.

I'd use it twere mine. First post in the parts wanted forum. No luck, buy new.

Yep, originial part on the calipers.
Looks like your other PO's lost some #$%*.
Wonder what else they forgot to put back on?  :P
