77 550k vs 76 550k
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:13:35 PM »
Hey all,

I stumbled upon a barn fresh '77 550K with 9k miles today for good price. I'll post pics soon. It's pretty rough. Judging by the amount of dust, it hasn't seen the road in 10 years or more. I haven't decided if I'm going to part it out, get it running, or try to sell it as is. I only need the coils to get my bike on the road for now, so we'll see what happens.

My question for you guys who know more than most... what are the mechanical differences between the 76 and 77 models? The carbs appear different, but other than that I'm assuming they are virtually identical. Anything else I should know? (about these bikes... :P)

Thanks,

Paul

Only the basic engine plus a small number of other parts(front wheel, levers +++) is the same. Everything else is different
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Geez. Part out a 9000 mile bike just for the coils because it has 10 years of dust? This one seems like it should be a runner with a little help. There are enough wrecks out there that are donor bike candidates. Are you sure this one is an organ candidate?
