1998 Yamaha Seca II XJ600SKC fuel pump Qs.
« on: June 01, 2010, 02:45:10 PM »
My nephew brought me his 1998 Yamaha Seca II  XJ600SKC.  Won't run.
I eventually bypassed the fuel pump and fed the carbs gravity feed style.  Started and ran fine on the side stand with me holding the Aux gas tank.  The carbs are mounted higher than the lowest part of the bikes tank, so a pump is going to be needed.  (I can't run fast enough to hold the tank up while he rides.  And, he hasn't yet learned to ride with one hand and hold the aux tank in the other.)

I took the pump apart (partially as I don't have replacement gaskets and they were being stubborn, sticky).

It's got two check valves, a vacuum diaphragm, and I think, an outflow spring valve.

Are there gaskets or rebuild kits available for these?

Is it reliant on pulsed vacuum to operate the pump (I think so)?

What other tests can I do to prove the old pump has failed?

Is the ethanol in the gas going to make this part fail frequently by hardening the outlet valve rubber diaphram?  (I think this is the part that has failed in the pump, though I only gained access to one of the check valves).

Anyone know what pressure these are supposed to make?

Cheers,

TT, is it definately a pump and not a vacuum cut off?

If it is a pump i think you would be correct in working assumptions and standing rather than ethanol would do most damage.

If Yamaha parts supply is the same as in the 80's i would expect there to be a "Kit" for it but it is way too new for me to have worked on.

Thanks for the response, Bryan.

It's definately a pump.

No kit listed here.  I haven't found one anywhere, yet.  Just the whole pump, About $100.
It has a vacuum cutoff, too.  But it is leaky, rather than stuck closed.

Had a look and you are right, no kit but putting the number into the parts look up said that its on all the Seca11 94-98 so used might be easier than otherwise
