Turn signals...?!? UPDATE
« on: June 03, 2010, 07:54:44 AM »
Hesitated when I clicked the New Topic button because I know this is certainly not a new topic, but I read most of the previous posts and couldn't find any help for my problem. Have a 1972 750 which I bought 5 months ago. Turn signals did not work. Removed all 4 lens and carefully cleaned all sockets, removed/cleaned all the little ground wires & put in 4 new bulbs. BTW mine are all single filament. Still didn't work. Checked and found that the bike still had original Honda flasher relay. Replaced it with a new automotive relay and everything worked well. Did all this in January. Yesterday, no turn signals. Worked for a second or two, quit and nothing since. Checked this morning and found a bad bulb. Replaced it and still no blink. Replaced flasher unit and still not blink. Got out the multimeter. Checked all 4 bulbs for continuity...all good. Checked continuity between each little grnd wire and socket base...all good. Opened switch and checked that it was getting 12V....good. Checked each side of the switch when it was moved right or left....each side receiving 12V...good. Checked each socket with switch moved appropriately, no power. Does this mean it's in the wiring somewhere and how the heck would one ever fix it with the wiring inside the handlebars?? Next question is if the little signal light on the dashboard burned out, would that keep everything from working?? Final question regards my switch for the turn signal horn. It has never worked correctly so , I mainly leave it off. Could it somehow be contributing to the problem??
Thanks for any help on this...don't feel safe OR legal riding without blinkers.
*!*!*! Since my original post, I removed and checked the little signal lamp that indicates your turn signals are blinking & altho the bulb is good, it doesn't light; so, I assume it's not getting power either.

Thanks for all the info on what you've already done.  I know you said you're getting power to the contacts inside the switch, but is it possible that the contact points on the moving part of the switch have corroded enough to keep from making a good connection?  This is a fairly common problem with headlight switches, probably due to the larger amount of current flowing through the switch, but not something I've encountered with a turn signal switch, but it's still a possibility.

As for the signal buzzer on/of switch, I've never dealt with one of those.  It was only on the K2 model, and it seems like many were removed a long time ago.

Gordon, thanks for your reponse. About the switch...it's brand new, so I don't think it's a problem. If I operate the switch, I get power to either side as it should be, but apparently the power isn't getting down to the lights. I put the meter on the flasher unit & when I work the switch, I get a few volts to the unit. Don't know if that is correct or not.
