Wow! What a difference tires make!
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:42:17 PM »
While my K2 is apart, I've been riding my K4.  The K4 had some really old tires on it.  So I swapped the old ones for the new ones that were on my K2 (since I'll get new tires for the K2 to go along with the new rims).

I took the K4 out with the new tires for the first time today.  It makes a world of difference!  If you're running old tires, I recommend getting some new ones.  It made for a much better ride for me.

I'm shopping for new tires, what are you riding on?

So far, it's the Spitfires that I am seriously considering.

Not to be flip, but if you are riding on really old tires any decent new tire will feel amazing. There are tire threads you can search for. You might find a recommendation from someone who rides the way you do. Twistys, Rain, freeway etc. There are a lot of variables.

I am trying the shinko 712s. They are made using the old yokohama molds before their cycle tire factory burned down. Should have them this week sometime.

For me, it wasn't really the specific brand(s), but just that the tires are new, and the ones I took off were very old.  I think the rubber just got hard and was cracking, and I'm not sure what else was different.  But I could immediately tell the new tires made for a much nicer ride.

Like I said, I don't think it's these specific brands, but since you asked, I have a Metzeler on the back and a Dunlop on the front.  I didn't plan it that way; it's just what I ended up with.  I ordered Avon Roadriders for my K2.  I give the link to where I got them in my build thread.

Hi,

A sixties and seventies Honda will handle better with new modern. Even better then from the shop floor.
Same with some decent fork springs and modern fork oil and of course modern rear shocks.

I have BT45's (front and rear), these are dual compound tyres, lots of grip in the corners and don't wear fast.

I'm happy with my Dunlop D404's front and back.  My chicken strips are a lot narrower with this set on the bike.  8)
