cb550F footpeg/ brake arm/ header arrangement
« on: February 06, 2006, 09:42:19 PM »
hey, I'm having trouble with getting my right footpeg back together right.

the problems are:
1) how does the footpeg spring go on that side? the only way i can seem to arrange it makes it want to spring up instead of back down like the others. does it do this so that it will stay up while you are using the kickstart?
2) what holds it in the correct position? it doesn't seem to have a stop on the frame like the other side does and like the K models do.

lloyd, your previous pictures (in an older thread) are great for seeing the entire arrangement, but these afforemention problems are still baffling me.

The spring holds it up for the kick starter. Otherwise it'll flop down during the kick stroke and increase operator anger.
Also holds it sorta down when it's down.  Not too strong, though.

The down stop is built into the hinge pivot on the clevis pin. A bolt for a hinge may not have the correct dimension.

here's a pic.  Ask questions.

well that explains it, lloyd. it turns out i'm not quite as stupid as i look.  ;D i thought there seemed no other way for that spring to go, but on the K models the footpeg spring pushes the footpeg back down, like on the left side.

the other question is refering to the stop for the entire arm, not the pedal itself. in other words, what keeps it from pushing down and hitting the exhaust (other than the tightness of the fastener) when you put the weight of your foot on it? the left side and the K models have a little knob on the frame and one on the footpeg bracket that hold it in the correct radial position. does that make sense?

Here's another pic.   Are you using an F frame or a K frame?  K or F foot pegs?

The F footpeg arm has a small hole in it where a post feature from the frame inserts to keep the arm from rotating.

Anything else?

i'm using an F frame, and as far as i know F footpegs. i'm pretty sure they're stock, as they are definitely different than all of the K models i have at my disposal. maybe i'm remembering wrong, but i don't believe there is a post on the frame  ??? these pegs definitely came off of this bike, so i must just be looking at it wrong. maybe i just didn't notice the hole in the footpeg arm, but i'm pretty sure there was no post on the frame. i'll check it out tomorrow. thanks, lloyd.

okay Lloyd, i was just being stupid. i was trying to mount the footpeg on the other end of the lower engine mount stud, like the left side does (a la the K models). i had previously tried putting it on the correct post for a minute, but it seemed too high, and it interfered with what i thought was the F kickstart arm. well, i guess it wasn't.

one problem solved, but dammit, now i have to find a proper F arm. my local used parts place can't seem to locate anything unless you have another to bring in for comparison (why would i be looking to buy one from them if i already had one???).
