15 A Fuse Popping after coil install
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:13:11 PM »
Hi everyone. Hope you can shed some light on my situation. Just installed NOS Coils and plug caps on my 76 750 K. Got everything hooked up turned the key and it popped a fuse. Checked to be sure I wired everything up ok (all wiring colors match up). Installed a spare fuse turned the key lights worked. Put the tank back on and the fuse popped again. Where did I go wrong?

Check to see if your tank is causing a connector to be pinched against the frame, if you haven't already.

also. I can't seem to locate where to buy the fuses online. I found them on ebay before, but nothing is coming up. Anyone have a good source for these hard to find 1 inch fuses? Thanks again

It appears to be at least for 1 of the fuses, otherwise switch to a atc spade fuse block, your guaranteed to find those fuses everywhere.

So it seems like the problem could be two things.

Wire grounding out on the frame causing the fuse to pop. I looked carefully, no chaffed/ pinched wires but will check again. Bike was perfect before installing the coils.

Also read that the coil could be bad causing the fuse to pop. How likely is this? The coils are brand new honda parts still sealed when I got them. Is there a way to test the coils with a multimeter. I would need an idiots guide on how to do this. I really hope this isn't the case. These coils aren't cheap and I can't return them after opening the package.

Any one care to help? Please

i doubt it's the coils. i had same problem at one point. was just a loose connector shorting on the frame. you can always check that beautiful rat's nest in the headlight bucket...

also. i get those fuses at Autozone... would think  any parts store would carry them

It is certainly not related to your plug caps (did you change wires too?  what kind of coils are they?)

We love pictures btw....

I'd say you're very likely dealing with a mounting location issue of the coils (grounds a post to tank when installed) or as others have mentioned, a wire that's grounding out which is impinged or just moves to a bad spot when pushed there by the tank.

Nooo! I don't want to go into the rats nest I was just in there last week. I was really careful not to pull on the harness to much during coil install to avoid pulling anything loose in the headlight bucket. But it looks like I'm going in...dang.

The fuses are next to impossible to find in my area (you would think they would be easy to locate in Southern California) I've searched with no luck. I found them online but don't want to wait until next week to troubleshoot this problem.

Thanks for your reply

yes I changes the wires too. The coils and wires are one unit they are NOS honda coils and wires.

good thought on the tank hitting a post and causing the short and blown fuse.

I will take pictures when I get home. Stuck at work right now, but not getting much done workwise as this issue is consuming me!

Give it some rest... there are plenty here that will attempt to solve your problem from their arm-chairs :)  Keeping employment these days is both difficult and important.

Yes, finding those fuses is a bit of a task, that's why I just went ahead and bought a blade fuse block, the kind that uses car fuses ATC style.

Got it figured out. Had one of the mounting brackets set up backwards. They should be set up staggered (me stoopid). If they are set up the wrong way the bracket will touch the contacts causing a short and blowing the main fuse.
