simple exhaust question
« on: June 12, 2010, 12:11:38 PM »
Hey All,
The exhaust headers on my 1972 750 are not in bad shape but I hate the rear parts. They are 4 into 2 that I assume the PO installed. The reason I hate them is because he (or someone) dripped something on to the left one, maybe while it was hot, that has stained the chrome for about 6 inches an ugly brown color. I have tried a half dozen different polishes/cleaners and can't even touch it. Attaching a pic but it doesn't show it well. Really, really ugly.
So, my question is what do I need to look for to buy new rear sections? I don't even know the proper terms. My current rear parts are slid over the back ends of the header pipes. Experimented once trying to slide them back...couldn't budge them. Would the two halves be welded? Do I need to remove the entire system to separate them? ANY suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry I don't know the correct terminology.

Not sure they come apart.  You'd need to know what pipes they are.  Stock for that bike should be 4 into 4.  Different manufacturers made both slip-ons and/or whole systems that were 4 into 2.

I'd suggest "Blue Away" AND "Simichrome" polishes.  I'm not sure how well they do on stains, but they work wonders on heat discoloration of head pipes.

Could it be battery acid that stained it?

Either way, you are talking about the muffler, and those appear to be aftermarket and may not be available.

Save this link, you can look up any part on your bike to learn the proper name:

Thanks, I ordered & tried the Blue Away. Used the entire order and ...........nothing!
So, the entire system is a unit?? No way I can separate the two mufflers and buy something which will fit? Dang, that's discouraging. I know I can't afford the whole thing. Was hoping to just replace the back half (the mufflers). I have no idea where, when or how the PO got it.
Thanks, guys.

Looks like battery acid burns on the chrome there.

Can I ask how, between the time you posted your question and this last response, you were able to order and receive and use the whole container of the Blue Away?

Can I know where you ordered it from and what your shipping charges were? :)

The stock pipes are one piece, all 4 of them.  But you may have slip-ons, just jammed on ones.  I would try removing the entire assembly off the bike, and then try to remove the mufflers from the pipes.

Bob750,
Ha! Pretty funny.....I ordered the BlueAway back in February. Actually, its proper name is Blue-Job Chrome Restorer. I ordered it from NWBay.com in Tacoma,WA. It cost $10.95 & $5.65 S/H. Pretty pricey, I thought. Anyway, with enough elbow gease, it will remove blueing but it didn't even touch my stain. I am beginning to agree with the concensus that, since it's on the left side, it probably was battery acid.
