'77 750F Sidestand Question
« on: June 22, 2010, 11:40:15 AM »
In the ever-expanding list of how do the F and K mosels differ...

Is the F sidestand longer than the K?  My '77 750F seems to lean over really far when on the sidestand.  With a brick under it, it feels the best.  I replaced it with a 750 K sidestand.  Seemingly it did not help at all.  Is it further possible that the sidestand length differs by year?  Admittedly I do not know the year of the sidestand I obtained.  Given the responses, i might have 2 to sell at this point.

On the 550, the K and the F sidestands were mounted in different places on the frame, thus I would assume they must be different.

Incidentally my 550F feels too Upright when on the sidestand. It makes me nervous.

I looked at the partslists....

And they look a little different, though who knows what the actual length is.

How long is yours?
Maybe somebody else will measure theirs and compare!

I will measure my 550F if you want... just tell me where to where. But it might be different.

How much up and down movement on yours?

Did you tighten the pivot bolt so the stand fits tightly onto the frame tab?

Oversize tires?
Longer springs/shocks?

Just installed it myself.  no play whatsoever.  to the best of my knowledge everything is stock...shocks measure 13" tires did not stand out as oversized, fork tubes in front are in stock locations...and the tab does not seem to be tweaked.

This issue just took a slight backseat given the fact that while trying to test my turn signals with a different set, I touched a previously taped off wire in the headlight bucket  to a couple of other wires and everything is DEAD right now.  Gotta check fuses now for starters.

crisis averted.  Fuses did their job.  Blown, Gone, $1 solution for my stupidity.  I can afford that price.

Just had this problem myself. On the 77 and 78 "F" the side stand mounting bracket is positioned further to the rear on the lower frame. It mounts at the curve on the lower frame. On the "K" models it is positioned a few inches more forward. Also the "F" side stand itself is straight and the "K" has a slight bend at where it bolts to the mounting bracket. I know this because I just installed a set of MAC 4 into 2 exhaust for a 77/78 "K" on my 78 "F" and had to cut the stand mount/bracket off and get a earlier "K" mount/tab along with a earlier side stand. They are about an inch longer which makes the bike set up a little bit and not have such a lean to them. If you need a picture to clarify I would be glade to post some.

I think I get it, but a picture is worth a thousand words.  Interestingly I have no idea what was on there.  The one that came off the bike was the same length as the new one that came off a K, but straight.  The one I put on was definitely angled.  In fact i think it makes it even lower.  Might put the other one back on.  That's what you get for trusting the old guy at the shop that you used to trust.

The first picture is of a "K" frame. The second is of my "F" frame with the "K" mount in location as it would be for the "K". Needed to be so MAC 4 into 2 exhaust will mount. Will be cutting "F" mount off. The third picture is of the "K" and "F" mounting tabs. Notice the "K" is more straight. The fourth pic is of a "K" stand and the fifth is a "F". You can see that the "K" has a slight angle up where it bolts to mount. The "F" stand is about 10" long. I don't have a pic of them side by side. I can get one but it will take a day or two. Hope this helps.

FWIW the model code for the 77/78F 750 side stand is 390, which is a 550 part code. All of the 77/78F 750's that I've seen seem to have more lean to them when on the side stand compared to other bikes I've seen.

I will take a pic of how far it leans.  I think it is farther than comfortable.  Dennis-I am seeing the differences.  I am futrhte confused as to what I really have going on.  I need to measure the lengths of both again.

You also need to measure distance between the K.S. pivot bolt and the ground with the bike upright.

My 750Fs lean over more than my 550's.  The one I am working on now got considerably better when I changed to stock length shocks and stock sized tires.  It still leans more than any of my 550's, but it is far less of a grunt to right it off it's side stand now than before.
