CB650 ignition coils. What to use???
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:21:16 PM »
What is the primary resistance of the stock ignition coils for CB650s?  I need to get some on my bike ASAP for a road trip!   Anyone use the 3ohm Dyna coils on the 650?

Partsnmore.com sells a new version of the coils used on most of the electronic ignition CB650's.  Price is $30 each.

Part#17-6803

You will need some new wires.  Z1enterprises.com sells solid core Dyna wires for about $17.

Standard ohm rating on the coils that used the Honda electronic ignition is 3 ohm.

Hmm..those coils look like exactly what's on my '80 650C...so, if I'm reading the cable entry right, it looks like I can cut those cables in have and use the caps on the coils?  (or use other color cable if I can find the spark plu ends by themselves.)

I am not an elecrical genius.  I use these coils and the Dyna wires with the non-resistance type plug caps included on the Dyna wires on my vintage race bikes.  I'm not concerned about radio reception thru my bike's stereo system and I change out for new plugs every three or four race weekends, so plug life isn't a big factor either.  The bikes run well as configured.  I use a total loss electrical system and a Dyna S ignition.  Using these coils and wires in different environments may lead to different results.

Hey, thanks, man!  Any idea with diameter and ankle caps our bikes take?  Also, do they come with instructions on how you fit them with the wire?

i believe mine takes two (somewhat) straight ones and two 90 degree. as far as diameter, mine are 7mm wires.
on that thread there is link to where LLoyd buys 'em

Yep, I saw the link, which is brought up the question of which of the many angle ones they have I need.  (I suppose I can just use a protractor on my stock ones.)

But, if 7mm is what is needed, it looks like I'd have to do some more searching.  Looks like the smallest they have on that page is 10mm, and most are 14mm.

How about the installation instructions?  Do they come with them/is it fairly easy for a a novice to do?

EDIT:  I just checked Bike Bandit to see if their diagrams would help...and from their drawing, it looks like the caps are removable afterall.  I couldn't figure out how when I was looking the other day, but maybe it warrents a second look.  Wouldn't that be nice to just replace the cable...

oh, my bad. yeah the caps you need are 12mm. it's a D8EA, right?
i was thinking wires for some reason.
they have a "search by model" tab on the right side. but they show all type angles listed for '80 650C.
i guess you'll have to get out the old school supplies on that deal.

i haven't installed the NGK's myself. have done others before that screw in with a spike. they should have instructions. the NGK splices came with instructions and they were pretty straight-forward.

Well, thanks for the info.  Might be time for some exploritory surgery on my electrical system.

BTW, is there any road-reason for moving to Dyna coils, or are they mainly a race application?

i have no experience with them, but my Honda coils work just fine, so i have no reason to change.
