Trail Tech Vapor Computers
« on: June 29, 2010, 10:38:33 PM »
I'm looking into modernizing the look of my bike a little.  I have come into some money (tax return finally came) and I've been looking at the Trail Tech Vapor computer for awhile.

Have any of you used one on a dirt bike or any other bike or ATV?  If so do you know if it has the kind of speedo a regular bicycle has where you clamp something onto the spoke and onto the fork?

All glory to the hypno-toad.

I run one on my bike.  The tach feature doesn't work worth a #$%*.  The RPM's hop all over the place, meaning you can't set the shift points to light up. I have since unhooked the tach wire :-[  If I had to do it all over I would buy the lesser priced version that is a speedo only.  I fashioned a metal bracket to mount my pick up cable and then drilled a deep divot in between two of the webs of my rotor for the magnet to rest in.  The magnet has stayed in place for 3.5 years without a problem, the unit itself is weather proof, mine has lived outside since I installed it.  They are tough as nails.

That's what I've heard  :-\  Hmmm....  Looks like I have somethings to think about.  Maybe I'll just keep the gauges after all.  I don't want to sacrifice accuracy for looks, and high tech doodads.

I'm trying to replicate cornandp's awesomeness - $20, a dremel and some kind of sealant ought to do it I think  ;D We'll see but I keep wondering why someone doesn't make a tach/speedo combo commercially lacking, you know, the ugly when I'd bet there's a market for

You mean like this one...

That Acewell is about as close as it gets but it's still kind of ugly (IMHO) and tiny. I think it's the line of indicators at the bottom or that's it's trying to do to much. Also I really dig the hybrid digital/analog of having the tach needle swinging around and at $350 plus it's better than 3/5ths what I paid for the whole bike in the first place.

So let me remand that statement: I think there's a market for a reasonably priced analog/digital hybrid that doesn't try to stuff as many functions as it can into a mini housing  ;D

Koso's closer to my taste but they felt they had to hang the speedo off the right. If this was an all in one round piece I would gladly pony up the price of the $350 bones

No particular reason they can't do it. It's just not in style.

Hmmm, the RX2N is pretty close

Don't forget these guys...probably the best quality of the bunch from what I've read, but the priciest too.

That would pretty much end the search except for the $683.86 - $713.66 price tag. Not sure it's all that much nicer than hacking a bike speedo into your tach for $20 +labor unless you need oil temp etc in your gauge.

Otherwise that's PERFECT  ;D

I have seen these before! At least this

Slick as... well, really slick

Thats fine.  Just giving me more ideas, nothing wrong with that.  And I'm sure this thread is making others start to think about switching to more modern gauges.
