i removed my front wheel and I'm trying to get my speedo off.  Should it come straight out or do I have unscrew a phillips head?  Just curious coz the PO had stripped that screw.....

Yes you need to loosen the screw for the cable to come off.

You have to REMOVE the screw to get the cable out.

Are you trying to get the speedo cable out or the speedo gear drive out of the hub?

I haven't taken the speedo gear drive out of my hub yet, but it looks from the service manual (page 12-10) for the 750K8 (what I have) that you need to loosen the front axle nut (on the brake disk side) and remove the axle. That's what holds the speedo gear assembly in place.

Yup for the gear you need to remove the axel. for just the cable you need to remove the screw.

For some reason those little screws that hold the cable in can be a real you know what to get out if they have been in there a long time. Make sure you have an impact or philips screw driver that fits perfectly as the head strips very easily.Have had to remove two with the little chisel-punch method  :'(  :'(
