LOL. True. The "FB" on my bike stands for Frankenbike, but to my wife it stands for "Frigging Bike", typically said with a sigh of dissapointment.

Ha! Thanks for the chuckle! I once got away with splitting the cases on a 750 in a spare bedroom, after the GF complained about me spending too much time in the garage!

I was wetsanding aluminum covers in the kitchen sink and......you can imagine what she had to say about that. There was a film of dirty aluminum everywhere. Damn I love that woman for putting up with me.

Looks like a pretty early Starrett by the checkered handle. I use them once in a while.. if you get a machine, new to you, check rpms and write in felt pen on machine or on the wall..

That does look like an indexer, altho I never touched one..try turning the top plate, ans see how many times the lever locks in, in one turn..

Cant have my machines at home, a bit big and 3phase..

Another pic, including the collet.
Yup, it is an early Starrett rev counter. I forgot to check the patent date, but I think it's close to 100 years old. I believe they were used mostly back in the days of water wheels and steam engines and flat leather drive belts, that would drive whole machine shops.

That does appear to be an R8 Collet...

I've got an early Starrett Tach very similar... ( instead of the checkered handle it's black bakelight and swivels )

Part of an old family collection...  and your right they are Very very early toys.... ( and still available from Starrett )

I built a 900 Boldor in the spare room only to find out i couldn't get it out of the house. "F" was used in copious amounts that day for sure by both the wife and I..... ;D

Frank, are your collets similar to the one on the left in the attached pic, except for the R8 spindle? I believe it is called a collet chuck, but I couldn't find any for R8. I found a 1/2 straight to Jacobs chuck adapter for $16.52, and R8 collets for $18.28 each from McMaster, so I think I'll just get the adapter and a 3/8 collet for now, along with the V-belt. Plus, my friend has an account with them, and I can just have my stuff thrown in with his next order.

I found that my old rotary table will fit! :) It's a 9" Alfred A. Troyke unit, if that means anything.

Also, I checked the patent date on the tach: Mar 28 1905

The old adage "you get what you pay for" goes double, when talking about tools. I've had some Enco stuff. Not the best quality, but sometimes the cheap price is justified.

Looks like the one on the left is a #40 taper, do you have more collets for it?

The one I have is similar to the one on left but with R8 shank, collets from about 1/8 to 1 inch.

The type you are using are quite reasonable, and give the greatest clearance, on a smaller mill.. one thing I dont like on them, easy to drop cutters.. use a rag or bucket under them.

Did you find any collets for the#40 collet chuck?

I know of a guy from Phoenix the usually goes the Bonneville, but he usually rides out..
Think its called #1 Cycle and machine.. or Firstline Cycle and Machine.. a guy in town here worked there a while..

Hey Frank. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I blame it on the "neighbors-from-Hell".
The collet chucks I have are #30. They fit my Bridgeport series 1 CNC quick-change spindle. I have 14 of these tool holders, in 3 different sizes, 13 with collets, ranging from .125" to .750". Attached is a pic that shows the style of collets, with the holders.

CNC is fine for production work, where you make the same part over and over, but for some jobs, a manual machine is the only way to go. Plus, the satisfaction of turning the hand wheels, sneaking up on close tolerances, doing it the same way our grandfathers would have. It's a Zen thing. ;)

I lost the the little spacer that goes into the back brake lever arm on one of my 550's...    Spent 30 minutes looking for it before I spent 5 minutes making it....

Hard to do with a CNC equipment.... Like you say... it truly is a Zen thing....   Stuff like that has huge value...
