Well, as long as we can guess..... I don't see any problem with the box fitting in the space. The F2 carbs are 2mm bigger at the engine, but may be the same size as K model at the intake. If they are not the same size then you may need to swap out the air trumpets? in the airbox to avoid a loose/tight fit. F2 carbs are 45mm OD at the intake.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I think a secret to a good mechanic is patient...going to pods is redoing some engineering that a bunch of japanese(and talented) engineers did...I like pods...for some it just not worth the time and effort for the results ya get...I've been riding in the rain a lot lately(japanese engineer scratching his head ???)...ya might want to run airbox and try pods later ;D

If jetting the carbs is your problem and it is also true that the F carbs are bigger than the K's, then you are going to have no better luck switching to the F's airbox.  The flow going into the carbs will still be calibrated to work with the F carbs jetting.  Pods are better if you know how to re-jet an engine.  They always get a bad reputation because most people don't have the patience or know how to set the carbs properly.  They are not easy to recalibrate for but once the carbs are dialed in, the engine will run many times better.  Mainly having patience is the key, and some help from somebody who knows carburetors.

if the pods had foam housings that dampened the air turbulence at high speeds, i would agree with you.  but considering that a cheap piece of paper is the only thing to buffet the wind on the pods i have, they are useless.  not to mention the body of the #2 pod gets in the way of the choke mechanism.  lame.  and a waste of time and money.

For my 78K project I am using KN oval pods because they look better than the stock airbox.  .  I had to make some extensions out of proper diameter muffler pipe and radiator hose(very short pieces) and hose clamps to bump the middle two filters back by 3/4" and so that the choke mechanism would work properly.  Far as I know this is just a problem with the 77/78 carbs.  I will have to continue with the carb tuning for the pods 836 motor etc in the spring when I wake up the bike from its winter nap.  Having all systems working properly prior to carb tuning is an absolute must, otherwise you are just wasting your time.  As to the posters comment that the engine will run "many times better" with the carbs dialed in and pods (vs stock airbox)  . . .I guess this depends on your criteria.  Probably high RPM power will be improved but I doubt you will ever be able to beat the driveability "performance" of the stock airbox. . . . . .

Hey you could always paint the airbox if you think it is too ugly.

Well I use both a '78 F3 and K8 engine in my F3 frame. I do not have spare carbs so I use the ones that came with the F3 on my K8. Aside from having a smaller jetting for the K8. The engine runs fine. So carbs from a F3 will fit on a K8 providing you got the right rubbers K8 carbs.
