Speedometer Dial Wobble
« on: February 17, 2006, 06:58:48 PM »
My K2's speedometer dial moves all over the place at speed. I have heard this is oil in the magnet area. I will be opening them for refacing. Has anyone been successful in cleaning the oil or otherwise fixing this problem? Would spraying the magnets with contact cleaner be an option?

Wait, does the NEEDLE move, or does the DIAL move? If the dial moves the screws that hold it down have rattled loose and must be tightened. If the needle moves, your reasoning is as good as any.

You can open up the speedo by Dremeling the chrome ring that holds it shut or VERY CAREFULLY prying one edge up all the way around. There is debate as to which is the best method.

I was going to use this method.

Thats the method I used when I took my gauges apart for cleaning and painting the housings. If your paint is good on yours, when you separate the housing after prying the ring up, DONT take the lighter colored inside housing out of the black one. Its a bear to get the ring back over the lip when putting it back together without the rubber seal wanting to go everywhere but where it needs to be.  >:(  Try and keep the chrome ring on the lip of the black housing.....that way you'll just have to get the ring over the back housing that holds the speedo guts.

It can be done.....but its not easy....and I still have to do my Tach. Since the tach is still apart.....I can post some pics if needed.

KCs76cafe is right. I pryed mine apart to clean the inside of the glass on my speedo and tach. The rubber ring you talked about is a bear and I made the mistake of taken the metal ring off the housings. I could not get them back together with out scratching the housings. Tried painting them and still scratch them when I put them together. When I did get them together I ruined the ring trying the seal them up. Alot to do with that rubber. I gave up and called the guy who is selling reconditioned gauges on ebay for help on putting them back together.I am having him powder coat the housing, using spare sealing rubbers he has, sent a tach applique with them and he is applying that, and resealing them with spare rings he has. He uses a professional speedo shop to seal them up so you cannot tell that they were even apart. He just told me that they will be done this weekend. Can't wait to get them back. If I was to it again I would do it the way that the guy who sells the appilquies does it.

Most common cause of this problem is a dirty, old speedo cable.
