Removing rear bearing retainer (K5 CB750)
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:18:45 PM »
Hi guys. I have a problem.

I'm trying to pull the left side (sprocket carrier) bearing from my K5's rear hub. I already drilled out the staking using a 3/16" bit, going a bit more than 1/8" down, but the retainer still doesn't want to budge.

Any suggestions?

A little heat, a little lube.  Works for many, many different activities!  ;D

Also might want to try spinning it in the opposite direction.  I'm not sure if its the 750 or 550 that has reverse threads.

What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

The 750s are all standard threads, "right hand", righty tighty, lefty loosey. Its the 500/550 with a ringer left hand thread somewhere.

Do you have a tool of some sort to turn the retainer with?

Yeah, It's an adjustable pin spanner. At least I think that's what you'd call it. It's two pieces of metal, pivoted in the center with to size of pins on either end. The smaller pins fit perfectly.

Now if the retainer would actually turn. I worry about forcing it.

Heat it with a heat gun, spray 'er down with some PB Blaster or the like, let it sit over night, heat it again and try the pin spanner again.  If she still won't budge, take a straight screwdriver, put the tip in one of the slots and tap it tangentially with a hammer.  This technique has a habit of screwing up the slot, so if you want to take a new bite, use the slot opposite the first one.  The idea being to keep the TWO other slots clean for reinstall with the pin spanner.

If its like a 6 or 8 incher like they use on bicycles, my experience is you don't have enough leverage. Whip something together like this:

Serious leverage. It'll turn.

I was thinking of taking a piece of metal, fitting it with pins and fitting it to my breaker bar.

Try drilling it a bit more. Then lube it up and rock in left and right, worked for me.

This may sound homespun, but has always worked for me. 1st, set 2 pins, (toolkit  screwdriver bits upside down, fit nicely) in vice, & position to fit retainer.( w/as little protruding as possible) ensure all staked areas have been drilled/relieved. heat retainer & hub til spittle/bottle spray sizzles on contact, (a prophane torch will do),spray w/penetrating oil, set wheel assy on pins & unscrew. stop before retainer completely exits & procede by hand. (buggered threads make re-installation a bear) luck G
