how to use dwell tach ?
« on: February 21, 2006, 10:43:37 PM »
Hi, I got this old dwell tachometer on a garage sale ..  It is a Penske 244.21013 model and apparently can check points resistance dwell angle and high/low rpm. I never used one before..
Where cdo I hook it up on my 750f ?

Any advice?

I had completely forgotten that I have a Snap-On tach & dwell meter that I bought back about
72'. I'll have to reacquaint myself with hookup procedures. It does have the 4cyl selection but, it
doesn't have the induction hookup. I've also got a coil/condenser tester by Snap-On. Does anyone
know if I can use it to test motorcycle coils and condensers? I haven't used either one of these in
years. Any input would be helpful. Later on, Bill

Well none of those really help. It is something I have to figure out too. I just got one this winter so I can fine tune my low speed settings.

Most dwell tachs have three wires. Hook the red to the pos of the battery and the black to a good ground. Usually a blue or green wire can go tho either the positive side of the coil or to the hot side of the points. You will have to hook up one side at a time.

if it is a three wire two to the battery, and one to either the pos of the coil, the spark plug, or the pos of the points depending on the model tester and what you are testing. If a two wire model, then one to the battery or ground and one to the positive on the coil, the plug, or the points again depending on the model tester and what you are testing.

Since I bought my snap-on all in one timing light, tach, points dwell, and volt meter (it probably does a ton more things too that I haven't figured out yet) i haven't used my dwell meter in like a year.

Hopefully you got a book with that meter and it will tell you where it wants you to hook it up. if not find a similar meter in the store and read its manual.

thanks for the replies! this tach has only two wires, I will try them red to points blck to the ground to see if it will work.. I could not find any book for similar tach..

Sean, thanks for the links! My bike is running Ok, though I did not get to change the head gasket, anyway I have oil on all my pants by now  ;D
It was a first winter I was riding it and I was surprised how reliably it starts in rain...  I put stock air filter back, though..

cheers,

Analog dwell meters are hard to find, killer score  ;D. I picked one up 10 years ago, dont know where it went. Just sort of gained legs and walked away like a lot of tools of that time. >:(

Black to ground and red to coil side of points probably. I think it needs to be this way to measure points resistance?
The tach will read wonky, since the ignition fires each coil once every crank rotation it will look like a 2-cylinder distributor ignition engine... and there's no 2 cylinder setting for the knob. The RPM should read 1/2 actual with the switch in the 4 cylinder setting.
Check inside and see if it needs a battery.
