valve seat woes
« on: August 13, 2010, 07:40:03 PM »
so Im rebuilding my head, lapping my valves and come across the number 3 cylinder intake valve seat. It seems to have some slight pitting and some tiny lines and gouges in the seat itself. It looks nothing like the rest of the seats, It looks like somebody got some really coarse lapping compound and torqued the valve in, ruining the seat. Is there any way to really salvage the seat or is my best bet getting the valve seat recut? Ill try and post pictures later.

thanks!

Chances are, a recut is needed. Usually, this damage comes from the carbon bits floating around inside the cylinder when a particular cylinder had problems with buildup. It can also happen if the guide is too loose or the valve seal is too hard from age, which lets oil slide down onto the face and burn: this makes a nice lapping compound while running.  :D
