Saturday's qualifying was cancelled and replaced with a ten minute warm up because of the rain.
Their argument being that nobody would improve their times from the previous day.
The decision didn't help me much, I didn't post a qualifying time!
My stand in passenger finely turned up half an hour before warm up.
Things could only improve from here right?

Sorry Sam didn't mean to go missing.
Started this post Saturday night but got a phone call and had to do a runner.
One of the other blokes rang looking for a gear set.
We had one in our parts kit but we where staying at a mates place at Warragul and he was camping an hour away at the Island.
So we jumped in the car and drove back with the gear set.
By the time we got there they already had the motor pulled so we helped them install the gearbox and refit the motor.

Anyway, back to the race report.

Our stand in passenger "Up side down" Bob McKinnon is about a foot and half taller than Pat and was having real trouble moving around the platform.
He just couldn't do the transition from right to left quick enough during the warm up.
Oh, and when I said it was raining, it was raining.
Some parts Victoria copped six inches in 24hrs.
"Terry in Australia" was going to come down for a look and piked it, the sook. :D

So.
We lined up at the rear of the grid, peering at the arse end of around thirty sidecars through the rain for the first race.
We managed to pick off 5 or 6 of the slower blokes before the Kink.
By the time we hit the braking area at Southern Loop there was just a wall of spray, couldn't see a thing but I knew there where twenty odd sidecars in there somewhere.
We rolled into Southern Loop in a gear higher than usual and took a much wider line. Everybody else where railing around nose to tail on pole so we managed pick off a couple more.
By the time we hit the breaking area for Honda Corner three bikes had gone off in front of us.
Swapped a bit of paint with Dougy Flack getting round Honda but got myself all crossed up at Siberia and Dougy got under me.
Rounded Doug back up as we headed up through Hay Shed.
We went over Lukey Heights on full right hand lock, then down into MG full left hand lock, never done it before and never want to do it again.
I had my visor clipped up about half an inch but halfway down Gardner Straight the wind pressure slambed it shut.
By the time we hit the Kink my visor had fogged up and I couldn't see Southern Loop, let alone spot my break marker.
At this stag I think I had already wet myself but it didn't matter because I was already soaked through with the rain, nobody would notice.
End of lap One.

The next couple of laps followed in much the same fashion so I'll spare you the gory details.
After the "last lap" board came out we managed to pass Max Hopper the current Australian Champion as we went up through Hay Shed.
Never done that this year.
So when the Chequered flag finally dropped I thought we may have finished some where in the top five.
As we rolled into our pit Pat was waiting for us with the silliest gin on his face.
We had won the first race.
I just couldn't believe it!
We where leading the Ozz Champs with two races to go Sunday.

Now Sam I'm not being mellow dramatic here but it's 4am Tuesday morning here and I need to get to bed will post the rest of my report ASAP

Cheers,
Brian

Sunday's racing panned out a little differently.
A dry track pulled me back to the field a bit.
It was a lot harder to to make progress through the large field from the back.

Race2
We struggled with bike setup right through the race.
"Upside down Bob" was having real problems getting his weight far enough forward and while it did not affect our entry speed a lot we just couldn't get the drive out of the faster corners. This affected our bike speed especially down Gardiner Straight.
We struggled on and managed to finish fourth.

Race3
We increased the preload and rebound on our rear shock then put a little extra air in the front tyre.
This helped to a certain extent, but what I really needed was another inch or two of rain.
We had a pretty tough battle with a mate for second place but in the end we had to settle for third after I picked up neutral going into MG on the last lap.

All in all it was a great title meeting.
With the result in doubt right till the end of the last race.
We had teams from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and for the first time two teams from Scunny's homeland  New Zealand. They looked a little strange in their wool lined leathers though. ;D
We had three different winners for each race.

Overall placings where,

!st   John and Chrissie Clancy from Victoria
2nd  Us rough heads from NSW
3rd   Terry and Chris Gay Victoria

We'll change the oil and filter, flush the fuel system, remove the battery and throw a tarp over the old girl and that's that.
Nearly went out with a bang.
Oh well ;)

Cheers,
Brian

Well done Brian, nice to see ya stopped a Victoria 1 2 :D
It seems the norm that sidecar drivers can't keep hold of the same passenger, it don't help things if ya have to keep swapping all the time, drafting old farts in that can't move around chair quick enough (ask me how I know  ;D ;D ;D )
Good luck for next season mate. 8)

Just the same it sounds like you added years to your life.  ;D

Thanks mate,
But no, at this stage unless Pat has a miraculous recovery that's it she's all over.

Thank's Mike,

The cam is definitely the duck's gut's.
But I don't think I've got it dialed quite right yet.
Looking forward to getting a set of your barrels
at some stage. They may be the answer to my troubles with our big motor.
One day my young fella may show some interest in racing the old girl.

Cheers,
Brian

Sorry Sam, that's it.
There will be no next year.
I've have only ever ridden with Pat since we started racing Dirt Track Back in 1981.
I would not have finished the season if Pat hadn't bullied me into it.
So unless he has a miraculous recovery we have retired.

Nothing wrong with us old farts mate!
"Upside down" Bob is an old hand but he was just to big for the platform Pat had set up.

Cheers,
Brian

OK, if Pat won't bully you I will. ;D Get young Kane back in the chair. You went 1.5 seconds a lap quicker with him and he was just a novice. Get him back and a full JMR 1000 motor and give em hell, you know you want to. :D :D :D :D

Sorry Sammy.
Can't see it happening.
But I do have my eye on a set of those barrels.
I think they could be the answer to our problems with the big motor.
And I would like to get that monster realizing it's potential.

Just because you have retired from racing doesn't mean you have to retire from riding. Throw some lights and a license plate on the old girl and ride her about town! Use the chair to haul beer kegs and groceries. ;D

I'd like to see the results of a leakdown test with your present set up. I don't know what your valvetrain is made up of either (except the cam). I think we will be gearing up for another run of cylinders.

Interesting thought Scottly.
Don't know about the fuel economy though.
We have broken down our fuel usage at the Island and it worked out at around 3 kilometers per liter of methanol.
Not the most economical beasty in the world.

The motor we ran at the Island has a ratio of 13.5 to 1
The grenade thinly disguised as our big motor runs 14+

I foolishly assumed you were making 120 HP on gasoline. How about you throw in a more docile motor so you can ride, while you build the mother of all grenades? ;)

The motor we ran at the Island is our docile motor, 124HP @ RW. Runs sweet as a nut.
Our second motor is the problem child. Last time we ran it on the dyno it came in at 134HP @ RW.
We just can't keep a head gasket in it.
Mrick's Barrels may be the answer.

G'day all.

I've attached a link with photos.
We are on sidecar #92.  (Edit)
The bloke with the blue and black leathers is Cris Gay, his brother is riding #29 in the yellow.
Cris is a very good operator.
The bloke in the yellow helmet is me old mate "upside down" Bob.
There's one photo of the wet start on Saturday.
I'm the the little red blob right at the back. ;D

Check out the rest of the pics for all the solo action.

Cheers,
Brian
