72 500 frame - what other motor will fit? 550/650?
« on: February 24, 2006, 08:17:11 AM »
I may be getting a nice 500f, but what I really want is a 550f.  Can I fit a 550 motor in the 500 frame?  What are the differences between a 500f and 550f?   How about a 650?   Is there anything bad about either motor?  Is one preferred over the other? Why?

Thanks!
Eric

Short answer is that both will fit as the mountings are the same.  That doesn't go for the other bits though (carbs, pipes, footrests, cables etc)

I'm just about to take out the (broken gearbox) engine from my '72 500 and put in a 550 that "Number8" gave me. It'll be interesting while the 500 engine is on the bench.  I know that the carb jetting is different but am betting that it'll run. Also hoping that the 4-4 will fit straight on.

The 650 has elctronic ignition and other gubbins that you'd have to fiddle with.

Post some pics in the new gallery.

I'm really curious too. I have access to a cheap 550 motor. I'm wondering what extra costs I will incur with this transplant.

Well I don't really know (yet).  My motor is sitting in the garage at the moment awaiting temperatures >zero so that I can work on it.

I do know for sure that the clutch is different so a 550 clutch cable will be required.

Thanks!   I'm still waiting on the guy that has the bikes.  The 550f motor will be from a parts bike.  I may offer to buy both up.  I may give it the same cafe treatment I gave my 400f!   I'm thinking 18" akronts, clip-ons, rearsets, 750 carbs and tank?, cafe humpy seat, black ceramic exhaust, etc.  I can't wait.   I need a bike for this years VJMC National Rally.  It will be in my backyard basically (Cadillac, MI)!

According to Amercan Honda, there is no such thing as a 500F.  Cb550Fs were made from 75-77.  Cb500s came in K0 - K2, and there is a european 500 K3 (reduced bore 550 k3).

The frame mounts for the 650, 550, and 500, were the same.

4 models of 500's
3 models of CB550F
4 models of CB550K

I know of no emunerated list of differences between all models.  Though some parts sharing is known.

Best to ask about specific model interchange questions.

Steve 500 and 550 cables are the same, what you need is the RH Rear engine mouting bracket from the 550. Everything else will fit as long as you use parts from the frame year (exhaust mounting points change with the year) and the 500 kickstart
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Lloyd - I call mine a 500F as we didn't seem to have K1, K2 in UK (?).  In it's day (I was there) it was a 500/4.  Nobody else made anything quite like it. Even nowadays (34 years later), I say that I have a 500/4 and most bikers know what I'm on about.

Bryan - thanks for that. I wouldn't have bought a clutch cable without trying the old one anyway. I can see why the engine mounting plate will be different. Now to find one. Got a part number?

As this is an engine swap - I'm not planning to have trouble fitting exhausts onto frame etc... as long as the headers line up.

Then again, I do have an old Dustall 4-1 in the garage. If I've got the engine out, I might just put that on and live noisily for the summer!

Well, I guess I'm not a Brit biker then.  :-\  I observed many people call their bikes F models because there is a big "F" in the "Four" on the side cover, even though many of them are, in fact, K bikes.  If your locale doesn't have any true F bikes as Honda designated them, then local communication can succeed by calling them whatever is agreed upon.  However, international communication will continue to be confused by calling your bike something it is not, as we relate to the printed word rather than a visual pictorial of the bike mentioned.  A 500/4 or 500/Four is understandable and relates a fairly realistic visual picture of the correct form being referenced.  A 500/F has no visual reference by Honda, a parts counterman, or anyone in the States familiar with the marque.  I would picture it as some sort of hybrid and any further technical discussion would require clarification.

It gets even more confusing when dealing with the 500, as the K3 is a very different bike from the K0-K2 500's here in the states.

For example, I was going to warn you about the difference in rear chain sprocket tooth count 34-37 between the 500 K0-2, and any CB550.  But, since you have a 500F, I have no clue as to which rear sprocket you currently have.  All I can do is wish you the best of luck.

Cheers,

And...Best of luck!     ;D

TT.

VIN: CB500-1015277
Engine: CB500E-2154931

I guess this makes it a K0 with a K2 engine.

The 550 Engine is CB550E-1138923

I'll still call her "My 500/4" though   8)

The 550 engine number apears to be from a 77 Cb550 F.
What are you going to call it with the changed motor?

The SteveD rocket?
