My winter build project, cant wait for spring
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:58:16 PM »
Hello all, im new to the site but ive had this bike for 3 years now. Found it on craigslist for $300 running with title plus it had a matching set of INVADER wheels that were unfortunately not in great shape but theyre solid.. Guy i got it from was too scared to ride it as he heard the previous owner got into an accident on it. Turns out the previous owner got into a car accident. I know this because i rode this bike before the breakdown. Anyways It had a bowl gasket leak, fixed that and i was down the road, then came noticing the charging system didnt work so long rides were out of the question. long story short one day riding through a parking lot after eating lunch the motor locked up. Turns out after yanking it out the oil pump failed and it was toast. So then became the slow search for another. Long before i knew the difference in motor mounts between a SOHC and a DOHC i picked up a 79 750K and ended up customizing that one since everyone that either had a motor on CL or eBay thought it was worth a fortune running or not. So the frame sat. One of my best friends suprised me last week with a motor, +6 front end, forward controls, and a box of plenty to get my project going. It was his gift to me for graduating paramedic school. Plus the motor was bored out to 836 professionally as the previous owner was his neighbor who was a mechanic and machinist. So let the fun begin!!!!! (sorry for the semi long story into it but if you cant tell im very excited) I wish i had pics of how ugly the SOHC chopper was when i bought it but i dont unfortuantely but il always remember it

Heres a pic of my black 79 750 i know this is a sohc site but im proud of what i did to it with little money put into it

empty frame with square headlight (not a fan of square lighta but to each their own)

threw some wheels on to make a roller

did some sanding down as the paint was rough plus i thought a bare metal cleared might look cool

heres the cart of goodies my friend suprised me with

motor with polished covers on a little dolly

threw a spare tank and seat on to see what a rough idea vs bare frame looks like

+6 front end with polished lowers and brake setup

and here it is before posting this, pleny more to go but damn im ready to be ready for spring time riding

I plan on keeping a great log of this build as it will be my first true big build. all comments and suggestions are more than welcome please chime in. Thanks for looking

Looks like you're off to a really good start, just be sure to keep an eye on your trail as the 6+ front end will throw it off real fast. Glad to have ya here!

I've always been a big fan of the satin / matte finish, especially on frame parts

Im actually goiing to go with the satin finish as it matches the black from the motor quite well. My only dilemma is what to do the frame and swing arm in? Ive thought about silver, blue, gloss black (ive always loved the commanche bike from the occ guys and blacks can contrast)

i know its been a while but i wnated to update my build. ater finally getting my parts back from the pwoder guy (aweful story but oh well at least i got them back) i decided to for go other stuff getting powdered as i was far behind thanks to that jackass. So i shot the frame my self and i think it looks ok for what im capable of.

up next was fitting the motor in and thanks to careful reading and prep work i got it in myself in about 10 min (granted i lift poeple in some ways for a living as a paramedic)

then went the forward controls (the mounting brackets for the moment at least)

quick shot of the powdered oil tank

got the front end back on

and heres the roller as she sits right now (invaders are going back on as i like the 19 and 16 combo

up next is getting the stuff put back on, wired up, etc etc

So I got ALOT DONE today and it feels good. I wired up my bike, got my carbs back on (pain in the ass but it's done)  and put my new throttle cables on, and routed my plug wires (thanks lowrider Tommy), here are some pics

Now I can't figure out what bars to run. I'm not opposed to getting diff bars but I have drag bars laying around that helps with mock up. The drags by themselves has me leaning forward a bit when I sit on it and I can see that being an issue on a longer ride. With the 6" dog bone risers it allows me to be more relaxed when sitting on it. I like my 7/8 t bars I have on my dohc (cycle x sells them) and I like super bars as well (little rise and pull back) I feel the dog bone risers look a but goofy. Any thoughts please don't hesitate. I enjoy brain storming. Thanks guys
