EG - it's a reference to the movie "Karate Kid" from the 1980's... old Mr. Miagi called his pupil "grasshopper" as a term of endearment.

Then we live`s  on diffrent places on the this earth and see diffrent TV programs,
Then on the Discovery they had also a series hove the the insect grasshoppers eating up all  of the corn out  on the Farm :'( :'(

Miagi called the karate kid "Daniel-san",  I don't remember him ever saying grasshopper.
