1982 cb650sc exhaust
« on: March 01, 2006, 09:42:10 PM »
I went to patch what I thought was a small hole in the exhaust (where the muffler and pipe meets) and when I took the pipes off they literally fell apart.  The mufflers were rotted out on the inside and disentagrated before my eyes.

So I'm looking for a set of replacements.

Now I know I saw on here that going 4 into 4 is the best as it shouldnt hamper performance.

I'm looking for advice on what to get and any other problems that may arrise from new pipes.  I'm hoping not to spend TOO much as theres still alot of other work to be done as well.

cool thanks. I'm hoping I can find something.

I did see something interesting on JC Whitney.
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-VehicleBrowse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2006294/showCustom-0/p-2006294/N-200730459+111+1982+600014658/c-10111

I'm wondering if those would work since its the muffler area that damaged on mine and i might be able to salvage the actual pipes for something like this.

If yours are rusted behind the collector they will work but they have no muffler.  That is just a straight through pipe.   They do sell slip in baffle for them also.  I looked at these for the 360 but ended up just making a set.
You might look at the slip on replacement mufflers they sell for around 25.

I'm sitting here with the Jc Whitney Bike week catalog in my hand as we speak:)

The have alot of different style mufflers.  I think thats probably my best bet.  I'm thinking something short and around the same size as the stock ones but maybe not the bell style.

Am I going to have to jack around with the carb settings at all and if so what do you think I may have to adjust?

ok im getting conflicting advice from buddies. i need some help here:)

I have a buddy saying that I'll get more power from a 4 into 1 exhaust vs the others.

Hes also saying that the idea of just getting mufflers to attach to the pipes is a bad idea. to quote "those exhausts are hosed anyway
Nerobro: time for new ones"  I sent him pics of the exhaust pipes.  They seem ok on the outside ( a little rust on one) but the inside is covered in thick black powdery substance (carbon deposits?)

putting mufflers on it will be about $200.  replacing the whole thing with either a 4-1 or 4-2 is $300-350.

advice?

also between 4-1 and 4-2 which would be the best bet for the money?

4-1 is more power and less weight.  You might have to fabricate a bracket for the center stand or it will rub on the chain.  Dennis Kirk has a mac canister type for around 200.  Some people dont like macs but I have 2 sets and pleased with them.   For the $ just put on some slip ons from Whitney.
With 4-2 slip ons you would be less likely to have to rejet or anything.

Terry you have given me SO much information I don't know what I'd do without you:)

I was curious what you meant by 4-2 slip on or if I'm just understanding it wrong

heres a few of the slipons I was looking at on jcwhitney

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10111/s-10101/p-100000144195/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000144195/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000144195
cheapest and closest in length measurement. looks cheap though

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10111/s-10101/p-100000142715/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000142715/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000142715
like this one the best look wise

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10111/s-10101/p-100000142660/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000142660/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000142660
looks spiffy but may be too long and look wierd on the bike.

let me know what you think might work the best. I keep going back and forth between just getting the mac system or doing a slip on.  Rejetting my carbs I think might be a touch beyond my skill....

Yes any of those will work as long as you have a good collector to clamp too.
Be sure of the size one of those only fit a couple sizes.
I've never used any of these so dont know what the quality is but should last a couple years until more money is available.

Looking at whats left of the pipe I don't think theres a collector left on there or at least not all of it.  Of course I'm not 100% sure what it is I'm looking for....

Do you think I would have to rejet if I got the mac 4-2? I'm just thinking if I'm gonna spend a stack of money I might as well get something that will last as long as possible.

I apologize if my newbish questions annoy:)

Isnt the 4-2 mac about 300?   You most likely wouldnt have to rejet.  I didnt rejet my 81 custom(4-4) when I put 4-1 on it but I also went to 6000 ft altitude.  Ran good but after I started racing going smaller made it faster.

the 4-2 is slightly more then the 4-1.

I'm thinking I'm gonna probably grab the 4-1 over the 4-2.  Still cant decide which one I like better though.

My buddies volunteered to help if I do end up needing to rejet.  Considering how rough it ran with the destroyed exhaust I think anything is an improvement at this point.  I'm gonna spend the next couple days sourcing for prices on the pipes

one question though. i did notice that some places list them as just for a 650.  does it matter that mines an "sc"?

No but remember with the 4-1 youll have to make a center stand bracket to keep it off the chain.

I'd imagine having the centerstand hitting the chain would be a very bad idea:)

I'll DEFINATELY remember to make something for it.
Once again thanks for all the help Terry

What I did is use a auto exhaust clamp and put on a coupler nut which is long and angle it so it holds the stand off the chain.
