CB500 output shaft seal
« on: September 22, 2010, 02:21:02 PM »
I replaced the shifter shaft seal in the bike but I still have a leak from the left side cover. I'm pretty sure it's the output shaft seal.

I did a search, but most of the results are about CB750's. They mention a tang or lip that has to be dealt with.
What about the CB500? Is it just as simple as removing the sprocket, the old seal and pushing in a new one?

I can find a large socket or bearing installer that's the same size as the seal. I usually chamfer the very edge of the hole where the new seal goes. Maybe rub a little Yamabond around the edge and drive it in.

Anything wrong with that method? Any tips or tricks for doing this without splitting the cases?

as i understand it, the cases have to be split to do it right. i believe the lip still exists on our 500's, from what ive read its pretty rare to have that seal go bad on its own. i'd try cleaning the hell out of it, cover it in talcum powder and take it round the block.... should be able to see where the oil leaking from.

It wouldn't be the oil pressure sender would it?  I had a nasty oil leak from the left side cover and turns out that was it.  They apparently blow their top after 39 years.

Last time I was under the left cover, I would've sworn it was the shift shaft seal, so I replaced it.

I have a new clutch cable on order and will take a good look under there when I install the cable.

Is the procedure for replacing the output shaft seal without splitting the case the same as for a CB750?

I searched the threads and it was talked about, but no pics or in depth "how-to". Can anyone tell me what I'd be up against?

As was mentioned take the time to be sure that is the source of your leak.

Theoretically you don't need to split the cases, there is no locating rib/tab on the seal. However getting a new seal in place without damage will be the trick.

Clean it so you can eat off it before you start and like you mentioned a tiny dab of Three Bond rubbed around the seal might help install.

Worst comes to worst you know what you have to do...
