Coil Questions
« on: September 24, 2010, 07:12:51 PM »
Ok so I have a stock set of coils still in good shape no cracks with original wiring intact. Since im goin a custom route with my build i know ive seen a thread on making plug wires longer but i also have a set of honda coils in good shape too with plug wires but no smaller wires. So should i make the original coil wires longer or use the other ones and make wires and all that for it when i wire it up? heres a pic of what im talking about. Thanks for the help

Looks to me like it'd be a lot easier to  make the wires that connect to the harness rather than extend the spark plug wires.  Good luck with the project

I have spliced and lengthened lead wires with copper crimp sleeves on the condutor wire itself and then heat shrink over the splice.  It worked fine.  I do like the idea of just using the other coils and all new wire.  It is cleaner looking and you can use wires of various colors.  Bulk 7mm wire is available at NAPA. Although, my favorite color is flat black. :-)

Go with the coils that can get new wires. The small wires are no problem you just use the spade lug connectors. Joining spark plug wires is a last resort. With the capped coil you can use any wire you want (as long as the diameter is OK) and you'll know it's all new and good. Old wires may have arced through the insulation which causes damage that is sometimes very difficult to see.
Check the coil primary resistance. It should be close to 5 ohms for stock points: there are 3 ohm coils as pictured that will burn points pretty quickly, fine for most electronic ignitions though.

The other coils have a positive and negative spade connector. What goes where and does anyone have suggestions as to where to mount the coils as I'm going a whole custom route with my build? Thanks

you can mount the coils in front of the engine on the frame, under the carbs, or tucked under the tank if there is room.  Check "santee" on the web or on eBay and you will see many boxes used to dress up coil installations.

I don't see what bike your working on. On a 750 the (+) is a BLK/WHT fed from the kill SW. which comes from the headlight bucket. the (-)would be yellow or blue. Yell=(2/3) blue= (1-4) blue (1-4 points) yell (2-3 points)

Stock means put them where they were. Custom means put them where (YOU) want them only YOU can answer that. Where you put them will determine what you do about length of wire.
