How to check cam chain tensioner and primary chain?
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:46:17 AM »
Hi

I have my engine apart. How do I check the condition of the cam chain tensioner and also primary chain?

as i understand it, if you have the motor apart already, replace the tensioner and the cam chain while your in there. not sure on the primary chain though....

Go to the main forum page and at the top find then click on "Download manuals" -- scroll down a bit in the huge list of downloadables and find

"Complete CB750K0-K8 CB750F1-F3 1969-1978 Shop Service Manual: http://www.mediafire.com/?wqzmehqvkzl"

and click there to download that file, whose filename is:

"Honda CB750 SOHC K0-K8 F1-F3 Shop Manual.pdf"

On page 35 of this manual, in section 3-3, you'll find the start of the section discussing how to assess the wear on those bits.

The cool thing about this manual is that it has an index on the left once you open it up for viewing in Adobe Acrobat.

Easy to find the camshaft section from that index on the left -- go to section "3) Engine Mechanical" and click on 'Camshaft Drive' and you're there.

Me?  If it's a high-miles motor, I'm leaning towards replacing stuff due to the hassle of pulling/re-installing the motor.

You've gone that far, replace the chains and the tensioners. The tensioners' rubber bits go rock hard if the ones I've replaced are any indication. I know on the 750 there is a measurement for chain stretch or sag, perhaps a 500 specialist can chime in about this. I've never heard of the primary chains failing but after replacing the chains and tensioners in one of my engines, it's much much quieter than one I haven't done yet.
