Ordering correct chain and from where
« on: October 11, 2010, 08:33:30 PM »
When I purchased my bike it didn't have a chain on it. It's a '76 750K6 with an 18T front and 48T rear. I understand it is a 530 chain. Some of the websites I am looking at say to count the links on my old chain but that's not possible for me. I was thinking of an X ring chain as I really hate constantly oiling it but not familiar with it. What length is normal for this bike?
I also want to put new sprockets on front and rear at the same time. Brand preferences?

There's some good chain and sprocket info here which should help.

I read that same info from a link I found in the FAQ section. What I'm still missing is how many links do I need to order? I saw that none of Z1's chains are listed for my bike.

Easiest to just get a longer chain and cheap chain breaker and take off what you need I think. I got like a 110 or something like that and took off a couple links. Worked out as the chain I got was on sale in that length! Otherwise, it might be a 104 link but I really don't know.

Stock chain size is 100 links.

If you don't mind, though, I'll say your reason for wanting an x-ring chain, "I really hate constantly oiling it", isn't a strong one.  No matter what chain you get the outside of the chain still needs to be cleaned and oiled just as often as a standard, non o-ring chain.

I used to run o-ring chains on my K1, but switched back to standard chain a few years ago.  At $80+ per chain the longevity wasn't nearly enough when I can get a standard chain for $25.

I've got a regular chain on my other bike but I only use it around town so it's fine. I'll be doing more long distance on the 750 that's why I figured the o-ring or x-ring would be the best. There's some chain wax that I used on my KZ that worked well.

Get the 102 link RK X-ring chain and you will be very happy. It will fit the K6.

I replaced the sprockets and chain last week on my CB750 K6. I took Hondaman's advice and got a Diamond chain #XMC-1548-M-102P. I ordered it from Kaman Industries #336-333-9992 there distributors for Diamond Chain and there in Greensboro,NC. I talked to Larry a very nice guy all I had to do was give the chain number and he handle it from there. Chain was $44 plus frt. and it was drop shipped to my home address and it arrived only in a few days. Couldn't of been any easier. I got my sprockets 18/48 from Z1 Enterprizes. Great service from them also ;D I was going to go with a 17 tooth frt sprocket instead of the factory 18, but most of my riding is open hwy and I didn't want it to turn any higher rpm's so I stayed with the 18. My 750 does so much better now also quieter.

+1.  I got 25,000 miles out of the last RK on my 750 commuting through all kinds of slop.  I got the same mileage from a Tsubaki on my CBR with more to go.  I only changed it out because I was going on a tour and didn't want it to crap out on the road.
