1972 CB500 Wires in Headlight Question
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:43:54 PM »
Hello!

Have a quick reference question regarding the bundle of wires in the headlight in my CB500.  It appears the PO disconnected them for whatever reason, and I am unsure exactly of which wire goes with which.  I have done some research on here and have read that all I have to do is find the matching colored wires and hook them up, IE male to female (as long as they are the same corresponding color). Is this true?  I have my clymers manual, but it doesn't appear to explain this to me in a way that is understandable.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

For the most part, connectors are pretty obvious about what goes to what - the wires will be the same color, and the connectors will be identical.  Other than that, dark green wires are ground, and you'll have a few spares for the turn-signals.  There are full color diagrams on this site that will help a lot with knowing which is which for those.

I just went through the same thing with my 500. Yes match colors and plug in and like crippler said get a wiring diagram. That way you will know if the PO changed any wiring colors on you.

There are full color wiring diagrams?!?  That would be awesome!  I have only seen the crappy black and gray ones that are very difficult to read.  Can someone please point us to the color diagrams?

Crap...I guess I should say "most bikes."  The link on here for the color version of the CB500 seems to be dead...but generally, if you click the "website" tab at the top of the page, then pick your bike, then select "technical" followed by "electrical," they will have a link to a wiring diagram

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm about to go try this out so I'll come back if I need any help.  I have found a few interesting wiring diagrams but have forgotten where I found a bunch of them together.  I may have actually been through a search on this site.  Here is an interesting interactive one for the CB500.

I'll most anymore I come across that are interesting for my own and everyone else's reference.

Thanks Again!

The only ones that may not be colour to colour are the front winker wires which were often black with a small coloured sleeve of light blue or orange
