Help! Grips won't stick!
« on: October 26, 2010, 07:29:55 AM »
Hi,

Last weekend I had the pleasure of swapping out my mini-ape hanger handlebars with a OEM CB400 handlbar on my CB550.  The new handlebars look very nice but i'm having a problem getting my gran turismo style grips to stick.

After some extensive searching through the posts I tried the aqua net trick.  I sprayed the inside of each grip and they slid right on.  I let them cure overnight and, unfortunately, the next morning they broke loose quite easily.  I've tried to repeat this a few times as we've had some rain here and I thought maybe the moisture in the air was causing them not to get sticky.  Still no luck though.

What is somewhat weird is that the handlebar is the standard 7/8" but the grips will kind of slide on without any adhesive (can you call hair spray an adhesive??).  Now i'm wondering if the grips are just a bit to big for the bars.

What I am considering trying next is to wrap the handlebar ends in a few wraps of duct tape and then trying the aquanet trick again.

The other option would be to try and but another pair of the gran turismo style grips instead.  I've read a few posts where you can buy them online but I haven't had any luck finding them.  The pair that I have were purchased on Ebay.

Can someone tell me if they have tried a similar approach with the duct tape OR where I can find the gran turismo grips online?

Thanks!

Get yourself some grip glue.  Honda sells it for under $5.00.  You will get a tube that will last you a long time.  The other "home remedy" type solutions are not fool proof as you have found out.

well... that was a short thread.

I was hoping for a more creative solution to this before someone chimed in with the right answer.  ::)

We used to spray the inside with hairspray back in my BMX days. I suggest you doublecheck before pulling your first wheelie though....

First of all you are  using a posh hairspray. You need the Dollar store ghetto spray. ;D   Rubber cement will do the same thing. If your grip are oversize you will always have a problem.

heavy duty double sided tape. the stuff they use for golf club handles.
wind the tape over your bars.
1/2 fill your grip with rubbing alcohol, cover, shake, pour out, quickly slide/spin-on over tape.
done.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to try the tape trick.  I went to HD and bought some gorilla tape and some coarse sand paper.  I will wrap the bars / sleeve and then scuff the tape up and then try the aquanet and the grips.

Thanks again!

While you have the grips off, clean everything with alcohol too. Never hurts to work with a clean surface.

3M spray adhesive worked for me. Gaskacinch or contact cement.

Clean everything with alcohol as mentioned already. You should need very little adhesive but the rubber cement idea works well. Personally I like the old racing safety wire idea myself. Just wrap a bit of safety wire around the grip just inside the "flange" at the thumb end of the grip. Wrap it tight so that it almost cuts into the rubber. If done right you can barely see the wire and you never feel it.

If the grips just slide on you may need to find a tighter fit.  I bought some GT grips and they were tight to slide, didn't even need glue.
Mine were purchased from partsnmore but i didn't see a current listing for them.  Mind you they did just change the site so the grips could be hiding somewhere on there.

Thanks again for all the replies.  I actually made a slight change to how I ended up putting them on from my previous post.

What I did instead was to go to CVS and buy some cloth tape and wrapped the bar / sleeve with one winding.  That added some diameter to the bar and sleeve and then i sprayed on the aquanet and put the grips on.

I checked it a few minutes ago after about six hours curing and they feel pretty snug.

I do believe that these grips were slightly too large for the bar but i'm not sure why.

Anyway thanks again to everyone who posted suggestions

The grips are not the correct size for those bars.
