Honda float height adjustment tool
« on: March 12, 2006, 05:19:00 PM »
Does anyone have the honda float height adjustment tool that can post a good photo of it?  I've seen good photos of the one used for the GL1000 and it takes the measurement from the lip and not the gasket surface.  I'm a little surprised that the honda tool made to the cb750 is made so differently.  I'd like to see for myself....and of course the one in my "Honda Service Manual" is a poor photo and you can't tell.......

Thanks!!

I cut a simple 'U' shape gauge out of a spare piece of aluminium sheet for my CB400f. the legs sit on the rim of the float bowl and the bottom of the 'U' gives the height that the float should come to.The only benefit of the genuine tool is that it is adjustable for different bikes.

Ok, here's the deal.  I'd like to see a good photo of Honda's tool made for the cb750 because of the controversy over where to take the measusement of the float height.  Orininally, I measured from the lip around the bowl gasket (my bike is still that way with no problem), but I was convinced by many people that the measurement is taken from the gasket surface.  Now, recently I've seen the "Honda tool" used for the GL1000 and the tool is definately made to measure the height from the lip and not the gasket surface.  You know in my Honda manual the photo is poor and you can't tell.  So I'd like to see a photo of the tool used for cb750.  If it's the same tool then the measurement IS from the lip.

Well there are a couple on ebay right now.  this seems to have the best pictures of the tool.

Now I dont know about the older 750s but my 78k is measured from the surface of the carb body that the floatbowl gasket sits against. Not from any lip. And judging by the rest of the people here, their 750s measure the same way and this comes from the honda manual.

So while the gl may measure from a lip, the 750 does not, at least not on mine and not from what I have heard from others.

OK, here is the one on ebay (thanks for the item#  by the way)

...and here's the same tool, even though on a GL1000 carb.....there is no way that tool is going down into or onto the gasket surface...but this doesn't look identical to the tool I show in my "Honda" book.  I'll post it later after I scan it.

This is the tool my Honda book shows....and of course you can't tell where the measurement is being taken, and the book doesn't say, either!

My Clymer Manual from 1972 shows the exact tool as on ebay being used. It says and I quote," The height of the float above the carburetor body should be 26mm."

the 750 vdoes not have that lip. At least my 78K does not have it so I measure from the gasket seat.

All the earlier Kei Hins from '69-'76 did.  Wonder if they changed the tool 'round '77....when they went to the newer carbs?

the 77 had a different carb body. so it measured from the gasket surface also. Otherwise, everyone else seems to measure from the gasket surface as well. I suppose some do not but most seem too.

That tool is the sliding leg genuine honda workshop type what is supposed to fit ALL carbs, or at least in 75-78 it was
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I'm pretty sure that tool is listed in the K&L catalogue which almost any US dealer will have. Honda specify holding carb at approx 70degree anle so that float arm contacts shut off valve but does not compress damper spring. the photo showing carb completely inverted is the wrong way to do it, but the pic from manual shows right way (you can see carb held at angle)
