Replacing Ignition coil: 72 cb350F
« on: March 11, 2006, 10:49:42 AM »
Does anyone know off-hand if i the ignition coils for a 1972 cb350f are specific to that bike, or can i replace with something from another year/bike as long as the specs match. I know nothing about electrical so any wisdom is very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
Evan

Pretty much any SOHC4 - including the GL I think - will work. Get ones with good cables, the cables are non-replaceable in most of them. Some have replaceable cables but I don't know the models.

What about after-market coils? I keep seeing 1.5 ohm, 2 ohm and 3 ohm, does anyone know what the cb350f takes?

I read on Oldfart's site www.motorcycleproject.com that the '78 GL1000's coils are a bolt on performance improvement comonly done on our bikes in the olden days.

The stock coils are 5 ohm. Dyna has replacement 5 ohm coils, stock number DC8-1 is a set of two 5 ohm dual output coils that mount with very little work (a bit of filing on the stock mounting blocks). If you go for Dyna coils then you should get the Dyna wires as you get the right coil connectors already attached - they give you a 4' wire with a connector on each end. Get copper wires and either use 5K resistor plug caps (NGK are widely available with the right reach and angle you need) or direct caps and resistor plugs. The resistors improve the spark IMO, they are not just for RF noise suppression. You can buy direct at dynaonline.com but you pay full MSRP, there are lots of online shops that sell Dyna stuff for quite a bit less.
3 ohm coils will work and give a bit hotter spark while burning out your points a bit faster, but the 350F charging system is marginal at best and there isn't really the extra power available for them
