Comstar bearing removal-rear
« on: March 13, 2006, 11:57:53 AM »
I have removed the retainers from both sides and  the outer bearing  on the drive side. The inner bearing on that side and the disc side bearing are visible but I don't see how to get them out. My manuals don't show comstar wheels. Looks like something on the drive side has to come off.
Can someone who has done this explain the next step?  Thanks,  Dave

I know it sounds barbaric, but I just used a solid metal rod & beat them out from the opposite side (rotate the rod around the edge of the bearing as you go).

thanks chef - i tried that with a brass rod but there is a pipe/spacer between the bearings in the inside of the hub  - it moves a little sde to side but not enough that I can snag the end of the rod on the lip of the inner race  ???

The spacer should move aside enough to allow you to get a bite on the inner race.  It won't be a big bite, though.  Rather than your brass rod, use a length of cold rolled steel rod with the end squared off.

If the spacer's being a #$%*, you could try a slide hammer.  I bet you could get a fat screw to hold in the bearing somehow - or you could weld a rod to the bearing it if you have the means.

Well - took your suggestion offreen and looked around the shop for a steel rod. Found a foot long 1/2" dia piece, I shaped the end on the grinder, got a bigger hammer and after a dozen or so taps around the inner race , the first one popped out. second one just as easy. chef- didn't need to go to plan C and D
thanks chef and offreen - without you guys it woud be me, the bike, my manuals and a confused look on my face.   ;D

You may be able to use a dynabolt type thing . (you know the expanding anchor screw thing)
to grip the bearing ,then belt away with a hammer on the bolt.
warning::: i have never tried this idea!!

I know its only rock and roll,
but I like it...
