The chances a man will take for a bike build
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:30:28 PM »
The 4-into-1 cleaned up nicely and is in the oven, VHT baking at 600 F. even as we speak.  This is the second stage of the 2-stage curing process and the house is smoked up like a forrest fire with the most acrid of smoke.  The old lady went to visit and old friend in town, its the old girl's 55th birthday today.  That gave me time.  God help me if She-who-must-be-obeyed comes home before I get the house aired out.   ;D

You're toast Kong!
That smell will linger and linger.
Better get her some flowers real soon.

Here it is 2 hours later, I've had all the doors and windows open; the temperature outside (and in) is hovering just below 40.  I thought I had got rid of the smoke until I walked into the bathroom, its still there.  And then there is the whole upstairs.  Dear sweet lord, what have I done?

She should be home any minute.

I feel like a lamb waiting for the slaughter, and not a damned thing on the face of this good green earth that I can do about it either.  Have pity on this poor brother.   :'(

Only option now is to torch the place, that should get rid of the curing paint smell.  ;)

Put out some news papers and spray paint a little part on the table...

Leave it there for her to find.

Do not get any paint anywhere but on the paper in case you where wondering.

Well, you've gotten yourself into a real "Cat in the Hat" type situation.  You might as well call up a DD and go have a few beers at the local booby bar, come home late smoking a cigar and stinking of cheap perfume and booze. In for a penny in for a pound...

BTW - how did the pipes turn out?  Post pics once you're off double secret probation  ;D

That smell is also deposited on the walls of the oven.  Every time you light it up, the smell will return, and permeate whatever is cooked in the oven.

Yumm! acrid flavoring!

Don't be surprised if it doesn't cost you a new oven.

I praise the name of Thor, I should have bought a Lottery Ticket today.  First off the pipes came out great!  They look like brand new.  Next, after the last panic attack I had a stroke of what I will un-ashamed-ly call pure genius.  I grabbed a handful of self-rising 'you-bake-'em dinner rolls and put them on a cookie pan.  Back on with the oven and in with the rolls.

Next, and this was the gift from the various gods involved, the old lady called and said she and our friend were going to go have dinner at the lake, and that I should fend for myself.  Great, that bought me more time.

Now the house if filling up with the aroma of home cooked rolls - not bad.  So they come out of the oven and I go digging in the fridge for for frozen left over spaghetti sauce, in a pot a quart of it goes and on top of the stove.  I sprinkle in a little extra basil for additional aroma.

So now its two hours later yet and in comes the old lady with about a half a snootful of red wine, and she couldn't smell dog poop if it was on her shoe.  This is remarkable because she normally has the nose of a Labrador Retriever when it comes to something I've stunk up.  I mean nose of a Lab in a working sense, not a visual sense - the old lady has a perfectly fine looking nose.

Anyway I blew past what looked to be a sure disaster with all the ease of a rich man.  And on that happy note, I wish you all a good evening.

Kong, I have GOT to thank you.  Today was MY wife's 55th birthday.  She read this thread, and we both had the best laugh we've had in some time.  Even better was I recently referred to her on the ADV forum as She Who Must Be Obeyed.  :D  This thread will make me look real good in comparison the next time I drag grease in on my boots or something small like that.  She still won't let me park the project in the living room for the winter, though.

Happy Birthday to both ol' ladies!   ;D

That was a great story.

Now, you need to go looking for an oven to replace that one.  Make it like a gift to her if you can.  Then, you have your own oven to cook your bike in.  ;D

Anyone reading this and wants to make a cheap oven ? All you need is an old table {or frame} a bar heater and some sizal insulation, the stuff thats blue or black on one side and shiny aluminium on the other.  Stick some of the insulation silver side down, under the table covering all of the underside of the table. Next cut pieces of the insulation to hang down to floor level and fill up all the gaps around the table, i used a staple gun to hold the insulation to the sides of the table, once again silver side in. Next just put the bar heater in a position so that all its heat is going inside the "boxed" in table and put what ever you are trying to cure inside. It works surprisingly well and be careful because it gets extremely hot.....

Not always - I know a guy who married the stripper he was cheating with [his wife divorced him, and took a lot of his money].
The stripper left him as soon as the money was gone!
