77 F2 surprise electrical problem

Happy Thanksgiving SOHCers,
Went out yesterday to start my 77 750 F2 and got no power when I turned the key.  Checked the battery and found 12.5 volts.  Pulled off the left side cover and found that the 15 amp fuse portion of the fuse block had melted and fused to the cap.  I have ordered a fuse block but can someone offer advice as to what to check when I install the thing?  Should I check the starter relay?  What?

It sounds like you got it fixed.  I don't know of any other problems that would have created.

my first check would be to see if the contact points where the fuse sits are clean. mine were corroded a while back which was causing my fuse holder to get hot and blow the fuse. once i cleaned it, i havent had any problems in that department. i imagine the resistance was causing the heat. i think.

Many of our fuse clips have lost their coatings and mechanical spring temper by now (from age alone). When the spring is weak and/or the metal surface dark or corroded, they generate heat when the key is ON. This slowly melts the fuse, and sometimes the holder, too. I generally replace the blocks with the modern automotive blade-type fuse blocks, as they are superior metals and the fuses are easier to find.

Thanks you guys.  Electrical issues are not my area of understanding and when things fail they always seem mysterious to me.  I will make sure I have good contact at all points on my replacement fuse block.
