Hi Everyone,
I've been watching the threads for a while now trying to get an idea what I want to do with this bike for a couple of months now. Here's the story, a little about me, and the current plan.
I've been into motorbikes since I was about 10 years old. I am a dirt and street biker. Did some desert racing back in the day, got into trials for a couple of years, owned various touring and sport bikes. I've always been my own mechanic. I currently own a 1988 Honda CH80 Elite, a 1970 Honda CT90, a 1985 Honda XR350R with a Baja Designs kit, a 1978 BMW R100S, and a 2004 Kawasaki Concours. I could go on forever telling about bikes I've owned and am still kicking myself for selling.
Enter the 1971 CB500. I decided that I had to have an old Honda four and had in mind an early 500. I am still searching for a CB450, a CL360, and a CX500 just to keep around for future tinkering.
After a few days of watching CL, I found this 1971 CB500 with a vague description and a crappy picture. I called the guy and he told me he had been tinkering with it for a few years and had lost interest. He said he had rebuilt the carbs and had it running but it was leaking fuel out the overflow tubes. He said it was complete but fairly rough and would need someone that was really interested in it to bring it back to life. Asking $500, I offered him $300 sight unseen and assured him I would pick it up the next day.
When I arrived I was surprised to see that he had connected it to a batttery and had it running. I was even more surprised to see that the bike was VERY complete and in pretty good overall condition. Very little rust except for a few minor spots here and there and a few fasteners, Tank it straight and rust free inside. The crappy picture I have attached really don't do the bike justice. Anyway I payed him, received a bill of sale only, and brought it home. Once home I gave it a more thorough inspection and found that everything works, lights, horn, instruments, etc. all work flawlessly, seat pan is like new, wheels, hubs, and spokes are very nice and everything is practically corrosion free. Aside from a few dings in the fenders and some cracks in the right hand side cover is it pretty straight.
I have started the process of obtaining a title here in Oklahoma and according to a friend who works a a tag agency, the process shouldn't be a problem. We'll see how it turns out.
Anyway, my immediate plan is to fix the flat front tire so that I can ride it and see that it shifts nicely and runs cleanly. On the stand it fires right up, revs cleanly, and sounds as solid and smooth as a any engine I have ever owned.
I have to say that my plan was to buy a bike to completely take down to the frame for a complete rebuild but as nice as this thing is I have changed my mind. I think I am going to sport it up a bit and simply clean it up, paint it, put a 4 into 1 exhaust on it, new tires, superbike bar, and upgrade the suspension.
So far I have collected:
tires- Kenda Challenger rear and Cruiser Front
fork seals
new points
uni filter
superbike bar- will be cut shorter
new brake pads
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I go and I'll try do document my progress as I proceed. This may take some time as I have other household projects as well as maintenance on my other bikes that need to be done.
I've taken some better pictures that I'll post soon but my wife left the cable to that camera at work.
