how can i quiet my '77 750 down? po hacked exhaust
« on: March 16, 2006, 06:24:11 PM »
i just got this bike and have been workign the bugs out of it and it seems like its pretty much dialed in as far as driveability goes now, so im moving on the the incredibly annoying exhaust volume issue it has hehe.. the guy at the shop told me that the previous owner had gutted the exhaust, it still  has the stock 4 individual pipes setup, but when you look into the pipes there are jagged spots where it looks like something was removed. the dealer that i got the bike from gave me 4 baffles that went a foot or so into the pipes and connected with a lip that was back in there, so i installed them last night and it did quiet the bike down but not by very much.. its still way too loud to start up at night without having my house firebombed by the neighbors.

so what i have now is a slightly less loud than before but still waaaaay too loud bike and im not sure what i need to do or buy to quiet it down a lot more.. basically i want it as quiet as a car with a stock muffler if thats possible, if its not i want it as close to there as i can get it.

so what are my options here? there must be something i can stuff in the pipes to quiet it down a lot more.. those baffles he gave me took it from a 10 to an 8.. and i need it at 3 or 4

thank you all for your help!!

To stick with the current exhaust, your options are pretty much what you did. Other than that, your best bet is to look around a try to find a stock exhaust set for the bike. I found one on ebay for mine, so I know they can be found. Those should pul it down to around, I'd say to 4 or 5 on your scale. You're never going to get it to "automobile quiet." that's pretty much reserved for modern day Goldwings. ;D

You can also buy after market silencers from Dennis Kirk and the like. They'll get you in the 5 to 6 range, but not much better.

Hmm, well isn't there a fiberglass wrap around the baffle tubes?

C'mon you experts.....Seems he could try re-wrapping the tubes and that should quiet it down.

Even at no exhaust, these bikes are not as loud as a harley. If you hate the noise that much, about all you can do is whack off the old mufflers and put on new slip ons but that is a pain since the OD of our pips is not that large. You can also get new 4 -2 sets.

poop. this is what i was afraid of.

i personally dont really care about the noise, it was a bit unbearable cruising at 50 with just straight through pipes but the baffles have calmed the shriek of 4k and up that it had before.. i just want to be able to start the thing up at 2am and drive off without pissing the world off. guess ill just have to push it down the street first and piss off neighbors that i dont know :D

and id have to say that on the straight through pipes it had before, it was just about as loud as a harley imo.. not as deep and rumbly, more of a high pitched shrieking type of loud.

I know how crappy this is going to sound but.... Steel wool and chicken wire, it works but wouldn’t want to spend the time doing it. I have a MAC 4-1 with a BMW exhaust and I can barely tell the bike is running half the time.
