Chain Lube Stains?
« on: March 17, 2006, 04:01:25 PM »
First post in the tech forum after reading so many of your amazing posts... and it's about getting a stain out.  I just lubed my chain with some chain lube and then rode my bike... now there's a bunch of little black spots all over the back of my nylon textile jacket.  Any way to get these things out?  I washed the jacket in the washing machine just a second ago, but it looks close to the same.

They kind of look like little stars...

Thanks in advance.

Might call your local dry cleaner and explain it to them and see if the dry cleaning process would remove them.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

You could try waterless hand soap (type for mechanics).

Dont dry it. It will set the stains in permanent. Maybe try some GoJo hand cleaner like Jonesy suggested on it and let it soak over nite.

The first evening I rode my 750 after getting it road ready it had just rained and our driveway is 1/4 mile gravel. I wore my brand new Carhart coat the wife had just got me. Had mud stains all up the back.  ;D She wasnt happy  ;D  ;D Lucky for me it was just mud and not chain lube.

Not positive if it'll work on nylone, but on cotton clothes(jeans, shirts, sweatshirts, etc...)  I use a product called electroclean.  It's in an aerosl can and its made for cleaning and degreasing engine parts.  Very strong stuff and best cleaner I have ever used.  I've gotten oil on my clothes, washed and dried them...still didnt come out, put the electro clean on them, threw em back in the washer, and they came out clean.  You could try to use some other kinds of parts cleaner if you can't find this, don't know if it'll work as good though.

Here in Oz you can buy a pre-wash stain remover called Preen. It comes in a pump bottle a smells kinda like kerosene (parrafin? - oily stuff you use in oil lamps). Spray it on the dry garment liberally, work it into the stain and then launder as usual.
As the others have said, the gel type waterless hand cleaners work quite well too. The secret is to use them on dry fabric.
