CB650 cafe
« on: March 17, 2006, 04:46:57 PM »
Project- turn an old worn out CB650 into an old style race bike.
Reality check- I forgot how much I hated the soft Honda bolts, every one has been rounded by a PO with limited tools and no concern for my sanity.
 MY IDEA FOR THE LOOK

Progress so far: Top end is dismantled, new pistons and rings required.
Attempting to remove alternator etc so crankshaft can sit on the bench and mock me.
Shiny things purchased: gasket set, alloy race tank, twin leading shoefront brake(I know it's a backward step) new rear shocks, new valves. I still hate Honda bolts

Man that's quite a tank you've got there. Ought to give it that race bike look for sure. Don't apologize about the twin leading shoe front brake, I mean it's part of the "race" look, has pretty good stopping power and definitely won't ever be leaking on you. Looks like you've got a definite goal for your bike and I, for one, will enjoy watching it come together. You will post some photos, I hope.

God I hate that...  I don't think cb650s were respected by POs.  Period.

I've had so many problems like that with my 650 it's rediculous.

A lot of unenlightened people owned 650's.  'Tis a shame.

more shiny things. New exhaust valves for both heads arrived today from Denis Kirk, that was quick, I wish they had the rest of the jig saw I need. I will have to go have a pint and celebrate then sleep with them under my pillow.Am I sick or just a little bit demented ?

question time, I'm trying to mock up a seat/cowl but am struggling to find a home for a licence plate and tail light....Soooooo do I just make a ducktail and then have a light and plate tagged on a mud guard extension, or incorporate the light into the cowl.
my head is hurting trying to find the look

Friend of mine has plate and light clamped under the silencer. doesnt look as weird as you'd think and a lot better than the chopper method of having it stuck out the left side as an afterthought

update.. I am in the process of making the seat/ cowl. I decided to incorporate the original taillight into the cowl, took 3 goes to find the right way to do this. after much shaping and sanding it was ready for the next step, took the bike off the mainstand, the back wheel fell out(stupid bastard) and dropped the bike and broke my mold in half. So have now glassed the bits back together. QUESTION it is trying to snow here now, should I increase the amount of hardener I am using for the glass to go off ?

sorry about the lack of pics, only camera I have is one of those 1 time jobs, so have to get it developed then scan etc. The tank is a late 60's  hand made alloy that I bought, it is carrying some battle scars from it's race days but I think it looks the goods.

OK the bike is now completely dismantled, I haven't found where the bit of aluminum that was in my sump came from ?????? that is good because the engine seems in good nick, it must have dropped down the cam chain tunnel during a previous motor job(I hope) I'm pleasantly surprised at the lack of wear on a 70,000K motor.

I initialy thought I would just pull the head and check the condition of the motor, I also dropped the sump, lurking in there was a piece of aluminium, it's cast and looks as tho it  is half a 6mm thread(female) so the motor has to be dismantled to find out what the !##!
plans are just new valves, pistons, rings, primary chain tensioner, bearings and maybe chains. I have a CV carb engine that I will experiment on re performance, but since there isn't a great deal of information available for these motors, this spare motor will be my " rip #$%* or bust project"
