brake pad rub
« on: March 20, 2006, 08:23:54 AM »
Hello All
Last night I finished reassembly of the rear master cylinder and caliper on the 78 750F. The only new parts were the pads, everything else was just cleaned.   Seems to work properly  and the disc is straight.  Question - is some pad/disc rubbing normal?   The wheel still turns freely but there is some friction.  I'm thinking maybe in actual road use vibration and movement of the disc through the caliper might help retract the piston a few thou more.  Any help would be appreciated.
Still lots of snow here so can't road test yet..

Check pedal height adjuster. If its been adjusted at the 6mm bolt (10mm head) it may be that the link rod to rear master cyl needs adjusting.(its behind the frame so not too easy to get at) Common fault to overadjust and get pads rubbing a little when cold  but fluid cant get back into master cyl when it heats up and has been known to lock wheel up (the seal blocks the return hole, its designed to do this to operate brake but should return far enough for fluid to return to master cyl/resevoir)
This can be a problem with any bike that has hydraulic rear brakes

dusterdude - thankyou for that concisely worded reply ;D  I know exactly what you mean  crazypj - if I  understand you correctly, I should pay attention that the brake height adjuster  be only used for travel adjustment after the mc piston has retracted completely and its spring has extended fully. Thats a good point.   thanks guys
