My '78 CB550 selling price? What's it worth??
« on: March 21, 2006, 11:38:28 AM »
I've decided to sell my '78 CB550. I haven't followed these bikes worth since I bought it a few years ago. It has 11k miles and I just added an NOS gas tank a few months ago. It runs perfect and is ready to ride. What's a bike like this bring these days? Check out the pic. It's pretty much original except the CB750 front brake upgrade, pod air filters, mirrors and rear shocks. Seat has been recovered. 1600 miles on the tires. New battery. Upgraded rectifier. All the aluminum has been polished. Let me know guys!

I would try to see what sort of price you can get up to with your potential buyer. . .but the price for a 78 550K is not that great. Kelly Blue Book says $450, and the nadaguides to offer a guess for the K (the F they have at $725). If I were you, I would say $800 obo.

I could be wrong, but that is my guess. . .

Hello, I'm new here because I just picked up a 1978 CB550 K Four - Paid $750.00 CAD$. All stock and all original, 18 000 miles. Seen F's going for $1500.00 CAD$ and other K's going for $2000.00 . Crazy I know but new registration and insurance regulations coming into play next year for bikes in Montreal so 'antique' bikes are getting a lot of attention. Antique plates cost $80 a year as opposed to registering a new bike for $500 plus.... hence the inflated resale values of older bikes.

KBB is useless on old bikes. I know for a fact a running bike is worth at least $1000 around here. Nevermind one that is in near showroom condition. So there's no way in heck I'm selling it for $800 obo. This bad boy is going on ebay. Thanks for the Canadian perspective!

If you want to be real honest about it, KBB generally overprices the bikes. I am not trying to make you go low on the price, I have no interest in buying the bike (picked up a 77 CB550F about a month ago).

Best of luck on ebay.

I'd say it's worth at least $550, but then I'm cheap. I'd buy it myself if it was located in Las Vegas. Good luck!

I just saw a nicely restored 750 on ebay with an opening bid of 6250, but I doubt that guy will get any bids
I paid 500 for mine, and even though it was in a few pieces, the engine had been gone through enough to where I was comfortable with the rest of the work it required. I've put it back together, done some work to it, spent a few hundred on some parts, but if I HAD to sell it today, I would only expect to get 500 for it. thats the thing with these old bikes, you don't work on them to make money, you work on em cause it makes you feel good. in the end you get to ride something that makes you feel even better

These bikes... The economy is the solution and the problem. Personally, I think they are a bit undervalued. You can get em cheap, but trying to get your money out of them might be somewhat difficult. I got mine for $500 and I don't think it will ever be worth less than that! Whatever the market will bear!  ;D

I just sold the '78 CB550K today for $1275. The guy was extremely excited about it as it was the exact same bike he had when he was 18 (he was 47). I guess it just takes the right buyer.
