What does it cost...
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:24:47 PM »
I may be moving to New Zealand in October and I was wondering if anyone knows how much it would cost to ship my bike? Are there extra taxes to get it legal there on top of just the shipping cost? If I were to buy extra bikes for others who may want them would anyone be interested in helping pay for a crate to get them all there? My wife and I plan on moving to NZ and I DO NOT want to leave my bike behind. I'll help you if you help me. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the info Scunny. Looks like registration and licensing is more than I ever imagined! Between the two do you usually have to pay over $1000 a year?! I hope I just read that wrong, or maybe you only have to do that once.

Tango, I'll definitely contact you sometime down the road when I get all the details put together. Thanks!

only have to pay once to get on the register then an ongoing fee. I take out a 6 month period then extend it another 3 months if I haven't pulled the bike apart again. put it on hold for the winter.

Have you checked on roll-on, roll-off services? I would like to move there as well and looked into that but never got prices. I figure it will run you about $1000 to ship if you ride the bike to port and out of the destination port but I cannot say that for sure but I would baseline it there.

My wife was looking into some sort of container shipping deal, but I'm not sure what it is. She was saying that it would cost somewhere around $5000 for a full size container. We don't need that much space though.
