steering head - what is it?
« on: March 25, 2006, 07:07:08 AM »
My front end is shaky above 50 mph (78 cb550k) and I've been reading old threads on how to resolve this. Steering heads are mentioned? What are they? I know what a hub is and what the forks are, but I thought a head was a toilet on a boat.

 egar,
The best way I can explain it is: The steering head ( more often called the triple tree) is the part
that your upper fork tubes, headlight w/brackets(or mounts) and handlebars are attached to. It
may need to be adjusted, the bearings may need to be relubed or replaced. Hope that gets you
    started. Later on, Bill

I understand, when I 1st heard the term "triple tree" I had no idea what they were talking
about. As terms change, I guess it's up to us to stay up with them.  Later on, Bill ;)

The steering head is the front part of the frame that the forks fit into.
The triple tree consists of a top yolk and a bottom yolk with the steering spindle attached.
The spindle goes through the steering head and is suported on bearings.
It is all capped off with an adjusting ring and lock nut.

Sam.

P.S. that's the English version of it.   ;D ;D ;D
