Indicator problem??

Hi chaps how are you all??

I took off my indicator flasher unit a while ago as it was only working intermittently! 
I have a green a grey and a black wire going to the flasher unit, the flasher unit is marked with an X, P and L...can you tell me which colour wire goes to which?? I seem to remember there is a quick check to see if the unit is working OK, by connecting a wire somewhere!!????
If it is not the flasher unit that is dead, is there another obvious reason why none of the indicators are working?? I could not seem to find a fuse specific to these?

If you connect the grey to the black the flashers should come on when the switch is operated --but not flash of course--- I have no idea what the letters x p and i mean tho

Thanks.. Do I assume that the F1 originally did not have a 3 wire flasher unit??

I have grey green and black wires on my 400F

Green center- Black left- Grey right
