Hello everyone.  I Finally got the  1978 CB550K  that started the whole motorcycle craze for me.  7 years ago my freind bought this bike for 1500.  He rode the heck out of it,  and unfortunately crashed it a few times.  During his ownership period I learned how to ride it.  I was hooked on bikes eversince.   Well my buddy is having his second child,  and with his new place (and a little pressure from the wife) he just doesn't have "space
" for the CB.  He offered it to me,  and I picked it up from his garage the next day.  I love this bike more than he does.  ANYWAYS.... it sat for over a year,  indoors.  I started by pulling the carbs and cleaning the heck out of them.  Mostly soaked em and then blasted the parts with carb cleaner.  reassembled them,  poured gas in the tank,  and fired it up.  Oh yeah,  it does have a new battery. After several attempts,  it finally started and ran,  with the choke,  but after the rpms went down,  it died.  So then i tried to start it with no choke....nothing.  Basically,  it will idle with the choke engaged,  but as soon as I give it gas,  or release the choke,  it dies.  I plan on replacing the plugs cause they are horrible,  and the oil as well.  I have no manual and or no idea where to buy or find an oil filter.  I know this was a long read,  but I promise to leave em short from now on....

Hey! Welcome.

Check the FAQs for a maintenance manual you can download (www.mctangen.dk/SOHCmanual.pdf), as well as a list of suppliers. Most any bike store should be able to get the filter for you. More manuals on www.honda4fun.com or download 500/550 manual at http://ca.briefcase.yahoo.com/taysan216@rogers.com

Then read the carb FAQs and see if there is anything that can help you there.

You said you poured gas in but did not mention if you cleaned out the tank and the strainer/filter on the petcock. If you didn't do this it isn't going to run good.

Hey there I just went through  similar thing with mine and found that the slow speed? jets were plugged. even after cleaning everything else. The trouble is the hole is so tiny that you can barely see through it when it isn't clogged. I had to take a tiny strand of copper wire from a  speaker cable and use it to unstop the jet. I downloaded the honda 4fun manual it helped me alot.
