Good job mate, and good to know their customer service is still as good as ever. A guy on the Kawasaki forums was cursing them because he had two Dyna 2000 control boxes sh1t themselves in short order, but rather than contact them he just bought another one. Sucker… ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I bought a 20 year old dyna from my brother, I'm considering a dyna/old ARD /late ARD test on the same engine. A friend bought an oscilloscope to observe the pulse width and ignition on his  drag car. I might glean some info from him how to use one.

I don't understand the fascination with ARD magneto's Don, I've got a couple in my garage and they're junk, IMHO. I understand that hooking up a tractor magneto eliminates the need for a battery, but considering that they probably weigh as much as a battery, what's the point? They're fixed on full advance and you can't change that, so if you're riding a bike with kickstart only there's a good chance that it'll kick back savagely and you'll have a permanently bruised foot.

I think that nowadays a Dyna S (or even better, a Dyna 2000) with a small lithium battery hidden under the seat would be a far better option. And way cheaper than the stupid money that folks are paying for a ratty old ARD magneto. ;D

Pure nostalgia Terry. I know a Dyna or a Pamco or a half dozen others make more spark and use less power. The smart move would be to gut it and use the drive to turn a vacuum pump on a race engine.
The late model ARD does have a timing retard for starting though. I've been told it's closer to a cdi than a mag but I believe those guys thought the wire goes to 12V. I still think it's the ground to kill it, and it generates its own power.

Yep, definitely a nostalgia thing Don, they were always a pretty rough casting internally. The two Z1 ARD's I have here are later versions than the original tractor magneto (which was the nicest looking one, I reckon) with what looks like old 2 stroke dirt bikes magnetos inside, with a rotor button for a long obsolete car driven by the little belt, with a long obsolete distributor cap held on with a piece of wire fashioned into some sort of bail. I haven't seen any lever on them to set the advance. I did think about putting one on an engine with a Dyna 2000 hidden inside, but of course have never actually done it, as one day someone will want to pay me a lot of money for them...... ;D

Not auguring your point but…..
Some later magnetos had advance levers on them.  All the way up or down shut them down…
I’ll try to find a picture of one. Some old airplanes had a linkage that could too, handing the propeller over made for good tuners…😜

That little rod went to a bell crank of a sort so the operator could be seated..
On the td18 dozer you would move it to the shut off position and then advance it a little until it started to hit..
As it warmed up you would advance it until it smoothed out best and obtained the highest rpm… I think 50-60 rpm was tops..
Try to let her run on gas right up to the point you thought the small 1 gallon gas tank was about to run out..
Throw the diesel Throttle wide open and the diesel side High compression lever straight up at the same time…
Clouds of blue then black smoke and a 1000 cubes screamed alive…
900 rpm wfo high idle no load if I’m remembering correctly….😜

Thanks mate, that's an International Harvester maggy, the ones used on ARD motorcycle mags were Fairbanks-Morse, I have one in my garage also. They didn't have the advance/retard lever, I think Don's saying that a later model ARD had one. I also have a magneto off a 4 cylinder outboard motor that I once bought on Ebay and thought about converting to fit on a CB750 as it's quite compact in comparison to the ARD. ;D

That two stroke should retard if it does anything…
Just saying…It’s a two stroke thing  to retard when they get cranking and their exhaust pulse starts
it’s thing…

The late ARD has no apparently available parts but I'm sure they didn't make those caps, rotors and components only for the ARD.  Someone knows what they were born to fit.

member Jaguar had all that info all figured out.  I don't think he is around much anymore but I would still try pming him.  He sourced new parts and rebuilt a few units right down to the bearings.  The info was posted on Caferacer.net but that site has detoriated to useless garbage, but it may be able to be searched out still...i dunno.
If it works good, it looks good...

That info is for the first ARD magneto fitted with the tractor magneto, not for the later ARD's that I have. ;D

I bought some of Jaguars last ARD parts for the early style mag. This later one is still a mystery to me but I did get a copy of the install sheet from the fine folks here.

I had posted the part numbers and such here as well for the FM magneto units.  Fairly basic tractor stuff.  Could dig around if someone needed.
The latter units are not magnetos, but a CDI unit from my understanding.

Completely out of the SOHC world, but miss it from time to time.  Would like to find an old drag bike or some other special framed bike again.

Still messing with junk though

Think it's time to buck up and put smoothbores on the race bike. Does anyone here have a lead on a decent set 29mm CR Specials that's being underutilized?

I see one used set on eBay in Canada that is of unknown history, but I'm kind of amazed there aren't more used sets around considering how long they've been available and how many are put on "custom" bikes that are probably only ridden a handful of times before they're put up to collect dust in the corner of a trendy clothing store.

Some encouraging words from Paul Germain while I drank his last beer on Sunday afternoon has my mental gears turning while my physical ones are not. Might have an opportunity for a second bike opening up too, but wait and see on that.

They are relatively rare "race carbs", and tend to be expensive when you do find them. Have you considered Mikuni VMs?
