Empty Oil Tank...WTF?
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:17:34 AM »
Ok Guys,

I have this 73 cb750 I have in storage, that once in a while I mess around with. Two weeks ago I changed the oil in the bike and then left it to sit. Yesterday I went back to start working on it again and I open the oil tank and nothing, all the oil has leaked down into the crankcase. I have heard of this happening cb750s before but this is the first bike it has ever happened to me on...so where do I start? Oil check valve? If I start the bike will the tank refil a la the oil pump?

Probally the check valve......Ive read several posts about the same thing. When I got my 750 I topped up the tank thinking it was low. When I got it running it started puking oil out of the overflow. I thought I had blown it up......didnt know that the oil would do that.

What you have on your hands is called "sumping".
Most v-twin bikes do this when they sit for pro-longed periods of time.

My 750 sits for long periods of time without starting and does the same thing. I just start it let it run for a bit, the oil pumps up to the tank without hurting anything it seems.

V-Twin bikes do the same thing. The problem is when people arent aware of this "sumping" and see the oil tank is empty, add more oil to the tank, then when the bike starts it has way too much oil,and usually ends up pissing everywhere.. ;D

Hey Guys....
You should see what happens when this happens on a 911 Porsche! Dry sump and 13 quarts!!!
Happens a lot....people check the oil after sitting a while and keep adding oil because it's always low...
Then the Mess happens!!!
